Expected outcome: Man Utd 1-1 Tottenham
Manchester United’s tough run of fixtures begins as they host spurs and what follows is a series of tough fixtures in the PL and UCL.
Tottenham will be playing their 4th game in 7 days when they come to OT. The Jose Mourinho side has played the UEFA Europa League qualification game midweek and the EFL cup tie. Their league cup win over Chelsea will give a boost to them as they showed the spirit to take the game to penalties and eventually held the nerve to win the shootout. These tight run of fixtures is a blessing in disguise as they are having enough fixtures to get their match fitness back before going into a congested period of football.
Manchester United did not show any signs of the team they were at the end of last season. They were bossed by Potter’s Brighton and Hove Albion in their second game of the season. United was extremely lucky to win the game thanks to a penalty after the final whistle. United was not fit and was sloppy for most parts of that game. However, United was comfortable in their midweek EFL tie against Brighton. United players are significantly searching for match fitness, and the absence of friendlies is not helping them either.
Spurs and United have had success against each other in recent times. However, Jose Mourinho will be expecting his side to win the game against his old team. Looking at the players on both sides, one can understand that both teams have proven match-winners on their side. Spurs would be happy that striker Harry Kane is in great form. He is averaging a Goal/Assist in 45 minutes of play. Their new signing Reguillon, was also good against Chelsea in the league cup tie. Manchester United has Paul Pogba back in the scoring column. The midfielder had a great stint coming on as a sub against Brighton midweek. Bruno Fernades, Donny Van de Beek, and Marcus Rashford are in good form. However, the boost will be Eric Bailly. He had an excellent 90 min against Brighton. His fitness will be essential for united as the season goes.
Both the managers were taking digs at each other all week long in press conferences. Mourinho will be edging to be on the winning side to level on wins against his counterpart. This promises to be a cracking contest.
This is going to be one of the battles to watch from a tactical standpoint. Pep Guardiola considers Marcelo Bielsa as one of his ideals, and this matchup is one to look forward to
