Will there be any more upsets in the next round of Euros 2020?

The knockout stages of Euro 2020 kicked off with a bang, the first match was played between  Wales and Denmark. Denmark won by beating Wales 4 goals to zero. In the match between Italy vs Austria, the Austrians gave a tough fight but eventually, Italy won the match by scoring 2 goals in Extra-time. Then came the most awaited Round of 16 matches between Belgium and Portugal. Portugal had more shots on target, more possession but the luck was not on their side as Belgium won the match by the slightest of margins.

Till now as the matches went on the 1st quarterfinal was decided between Italy and Belgium. It was Belgium vs. Italy at Allianz Arena, in the derby of the EURO 2020 quarterfinals. The two powerhouses will come into this match filled with confidence after winning all the contests in the previous part of the tournament. However, the Italians did have to go through extra times against Austria but avoided a penalty shootout defeating the rivals before the 120th minute. On the other side, Belgium eliminated the reigning European champions, Portugal, in the Round of 16. According to many, these two sides are in the best form of all the remaining teams in the championship.

The 2nd quarterfinal is between the ‘real dark horses’ Czech Republic and Denmark. The Czech Republic and Denmark are in EURO 2020 quarterfinals after stunning everyone over the past few matches. The Czechs eliminated the Netherlands in the round of 16, surprising most football fans and proving that they simply know how to play against Oranje. Meanwhile, the Danes displayed one hell of a football game versus Wales, scoring four goals and routinely handling the Dragons. For many, this is the most interesting matchup of the round, because there wasn’t too much hype surrounding these teams since the tournament started. This match takes place at the Olympic Stadium in Baku.

The match between Croatia and Spain turned out to be a cracker as Spain won the match by the score of 5 goals to 3 again with the match going in extra time. Then came the shock of the tournament as world cup winners France were ousted from the tournament on penalties by Switzerland.

Both Switzerland and Spain had to go through difficulties before entering the Euro 2020 quarterfinals. It was the first time since 2012 that Spain had reached the quarterfinals. The two nations outlasted their respective rivals, following a drama showing incredible power and a winning mentality. Spain scored 10 goals in the last 2 matches and showed resilience and qualified for the knockout stages. Switzerland on the other hand was the 3rd best team to qualify for the knockout stages. The Swiss side showed determination against France and against all odds they beat the world cup winners. Spain showed that ‘Form is temporary but Class is Permanent.’

Spain hasn’t lost in the last 12 games under Luis Enrique, posting 7 draws, 5 wins and only 2 losses. Spain is expected to win this match but you never know!

On the last day, it was between England vs Germany and Sweden vs Ukraine. England hadn’t beaten the Germans since 1996 but this time they beat them by 2 goals. Thanks to in-form Sterling and their main man, their captain Harry Kane. Whilst Ukraine beat the Sweden side in the extra time.

Ukraine and England meet in Rome, the Stadio Olimpico in the final pair of Euro 2020 Quarterfinals. While seeing England there isn’t much of a surprise, there aren’t many who gave Ukraine a chance to enter the last-8. However, Andriy Shevchenko’s side showed that they fully deserved to be here, following very good performances since the start of the campaign. England didn’t shine but their ultra-defensive style of play paid off. Now Gareth Southgate’s boys will try to keep this same winning momentum against the Ukrainians. England is the only team which haven’t conceded a single goal in the tournament whereas Ukraine has conceded the most goals out of the remaining 8 teams. This match can be one-sided but considering the number of surprises in Euros, anything can happen.
