In the past decades, India has produced a lot of good batsmen in their circuit. But the one name that has come to my mind is the legend Gautam Gambhir. The man has helped India to win in several situations and still doesn’t get any farewell match and stayed underrated. Gambhir has done possibly everything for an Indian cricket team. His records speak for himself.
Let’s have a look at some of his brilliance on the field.
2007 T20I World Cup heroics
Gautam Gambhir is the highest run-getter for India and the second-highest in the competition with 227 runs in the 7 matches he played with a strike rate of 129.71. His best innings of the T20I World Cup came in the final. Where he scored a blistering 75 runs which helped India to put on a good target on the board and to lift the first-ever T20I World Cup. He’s known for his fierce approach on the field and aggression.
The unsung hero of the 2011 World Cup Final
In the 9 matches, that he played in a world cup, he managed to score 393 runs with an average of 43.66. Including 4 half-centuries. This also includes a great knock at a final in Mumbai against Sri Lanka. Where he missed out on a well deserved century and got out on a 97. In the knockouts, Gambhir stepped up his game. With 174 runs in the three must-win matches and the top score in the final, he was India’s crisis man and played his role in the top order to near perfection. The real Indian cricket fans know the importance of Gambhir’s knock and his crucial partnership in the final with MS Dhoni.
Gambhir was picked up by the Delhi Daredevils franchise in the first player auction of the IPL for a big price. He became the second highest run-scorer of the inaugural season with 534 runs from 14 matches he played. He was promoted to the post of Captain of the Delhi Daredevils for IPL Season 2010. At the end of the tournament, he became the only player from Delhi Daredevils to score more than 1000 runs in the IPL.
In the 2011 IPL player auction, Gambhir was the most sought after player, fetching a bid of $2.4 million from The Kolkata Knight Riders, making him the highest-paid cricketer in the history of IPL. He was then appointed as the skipper of the team. Under Gambhir’s captaincy, the Kolkata Knight Riders qualified for the IPL playoffs and also made it to the Champions League Twenty20 for the first time. He eventually led the side to their first title in 2012 by defeating defending champions Chennai Super Kings by 5 wickets at their home ground in Chennai. Gambhir is the leading run-scorer of the Kolkata Knight Riders. During the same season, he scored 6 half-centuries out of a total of nine from his team and became only the second player to cross the 2000 runs mark in the history of the IPL and the second-highest run-scorer ever in the tournament. He led Kolkata Knight Riders to their second title in 2014 by beating Kings XI Punjab by 3 wickets. He led Kolkata Knight Riders to the playoffs in the 2016 and 2017 seasons and was also the highest run-scorer.
Gautam Gambhir has played 58 test matches for India and has scored 4154 runs with an average of 41.96.
In 158 ODI matches, he has managed to score 5238 runs with an average of 39.68.
He has played in 154 IPL matches and has scored 4218 runs with a strike rate of 123.91. He has hit 491 boundaries and 59 sixes in his IPL career. The 5th most boundaries in IPL by any player.
I don’t know about the underrated part, but he’s a legend of Indian cricket.
