West Indies Vs Australia 1st T20I: Preview
After a 3-2 series loss against South Africa at home, the West Indies are set to face Australia for 5 T20I and 3 ODIs. The 1st T20 will be played on 10th July at the Darren Sammy Cricket Stadium in St Lucia.
West Indies have the likes of Keiron Pollard, Chris Gayle, Andre Russel, Evin Lewis and Shimron Hetmyer in their lineup. Their lineup looks no less than an all-star lineup. Players like Jason Holder, Oshane Thomas and Sheldon Cottrell provide the sting in the bowling they need while facing a side like Australia.
West Indies often tend to face the problem that they find it tough to come together as a unit. All the players in this lineup are stars for their respective franchise teams, whether IPL, CPL, or BBL. If even either Andre Russel, Keiron Pollard or Chris Gayle deliver to their standards they can cause serious problems for the opposite teams.
Sheldon Cottrell, with all his cutters, slower balls and yorkers, might be the key man for the West Indies at the death. They would want to avoid too many runs at the death against a side like Australia, who will be auditioning various players for the T20 World Cup.
Australia will be up against the West Indies with a relatively younger and inexperienced side. Aaron Finch will be leading this Australian side and will be looking to grab the series without having the luxury of their main players.
Mitchell Starc is in the lineup and will be the key man for Australia in the powerplay and at the death. Whether it be the ball coming into the right-hander in the powerplays, or some toe crushing yorkers in the death, West Indies have to look out for the Australian speedster.
Players like Daniel Christian, Alex Carey, Mitchell Marsh and Ashton Turner would want to prove their mettle in the middle order during the slog overs. Josh Philippe, another young prospect for Australia, would fancy his chances against the Windies to get a long run in the Australian side.
He’s had phenomenal success with the Sydney Sixers in the BBL and will look to knock on the door for the opening spot in the national side.
An experienced West Indies with lots of firepowers will face a new but talented Australian side, sprinkled with a bit of experience. The likes of Andre Russel and Keiron Pollard facing Mitchell Starc at the death will be a treat to watch for fans all around the world. Mitchell Swepson, Adam Zampa and Hayden Walsh will play a huge role for their respective teams in the middle overs. Zampa is known to pick wickets in a flurry but Finch has gotta use him smartly against someone like Pollard.
On paper, the West Indies seem to be the favourites, but their main players not performing can be problematic for them. Australia plays smart cricket and know exactly how to exploit the opposition’s weaknesses, making the clash even more exciting and nail-biting.
