2021 British Grand Prix Preview

Silverstone Circuit

This weekend the 10th round of the FIA Formula One Championship is being held at the Silverstone Circuit, the home of British motor racing. Despite numerous track layout changes over the years, Silverstone remains one of the most demanding and fastest circuits in the calendar with its fast corners and swift direction changes. And since it is one of the challenging tracks on the calendar, Pirelli brings its three hardest compounds for tyres for the race.

The most significant talking point of this weekend is the arrival of the new sprint qualifying format. Silverstone is the first of three tracks that will feature the new sprint qualifying format. During the weekend, one Practice Session will take place on Friday afternoon, which will then be followed by a standard Qualifying format in the evening which will determine the grid for the Sprint Qualifying on Saturday afternoon. The final results from the Sprint Qualifying will then determine the starting grid for the Main Race that will take place as usual on Sunday.

Heading into the weekend, Red Bull have a lead of 44 points over Mercedes in the Constructors’ Championship, after having won the last five races. The situation is similar in the Drivers’ Championship, where Red Bull frontman Max Verstappen enjoys a 32 point advantage over reigning World Drivers’ Champion Lewis Hamilton. With a potential of 49 points up for grab, Mercedes will try to reduce the gap between them and Red Bull.

This weekend also sees the return of fans at the track. The circuit authorities are working hard to ensure that a full-capacity crowd of 140,000 will be there in the grandstands to cheer on the British trio of Lewis Hamilton, Lando Norris and George Russel.
