The first One-Day International (ODI) between India and Sri Lanka was far too one-sided. The Men in Blue came out firing on all cylinders, winning by seven wickets with up to 80 balls to spare. After a blazing start in India’s run-chase, the young Prithvi Shaw was named Player of the Match. At the other end, Prithvi Shaw, Ishan Kishan, and Suryakumar Yadav made batting look deceptively easy in the first ODI on Sunday night, leaving skipper Shikhar Dhawan speechless.
Despite their batters’ efforts, the Lankan bowlers seemed helpless, particularly during the powerplay. The second game of the series is scheduled for Tuesday, July 20, and it is a must-win situation for the hosts. Meanwhile, the visitors will be eager to put on another clinical performance and secure the series’ fate.
HOW’S THE PITCH?
The pitch in the first ODI was very fantastic, especially under the lights. As a result, teams should almost always choose to field first after winning the toss. Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav each took two wickets in the first game, demonstrating that the deck can support spinners as well.

PLAYERS TO WATCH OUT FOR
SHIKAR DHAWAN (IND)
In India’s opening game against Sri Lanka, Shikhar Dhawan led from the front. Not only did he shine as captain, but he also performed admirably as a batsman. He batted undefeated for 86 runs and led India to victory. In 17 appearances against Sri Lanka, the left-hander has scored 1069 runs at an average of 76.35. In Sunday’s play, he also passed the 6000-run mark in one-day international cricket.
KULDEEP YADAV (IND)
Kuldeep Yadav has found it tough to hold on to his place in the national team. However, in the first ODI, he showed his class as a wrist spinner. He picked up the crucial wickets of Bhanuka Rajapaksha and Minod Bhanuka in the nine overs he bowled. Kuldeep bowled a maiden as well and had an economy rate of 5.30. He is again expected to deliver the goods next time around.
India will win the 2nd ODI comfortably and seal the three-match series.
In the second One-Day International (ODI) in Colombo on Tuesday, India’s emerging guns will have another chance to show off their outstanding talent and earn a series win against a woeful Sri Lankan team.
