Manchester City is the hottest team in the Premier League right now. They won back-to-back league titles in the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons. After falling short to Liverpool in 2019-20, they bounced back and won the league again in 2020-21. They are heading into the upcoming season as favourites and rightly so. Pep has really benefitted from Sheikh Mansour’s wealthy pockets and has assembled a squad that can win the league every season. But the precious UCL trophy is one he wants to get his hands on with Manchester City. But are they winning the UCL and retaining their Premier League trophy this season? Let’s explore.
Manchester City welcomed back 10 players from loans at the start of the transfer window but have sent out most of them for loans once again for experiences across Europe. The biggest name coming to the Etihad is Jack Grealish. The man on every top English club’s radar has finally made a £105.75m move to the Premier League champions. Grealish has taken the number 10 shirt from club legend Sergio Aguero and will have some big expectations to fulfil given his price tag and the number on the back of his shirt.
Man City has sold left back Angelino to RB Leipzig after a successful loan spell with the Bundesliga club. Left winger Jack Harrison has made a move to Premier League side Leeds United while youngster Lukas Nmecha favours his chances with Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga. The arrival of Ruben Dias and John Stones’ regained form has opened the door for Aymeric Laporte who prefers a move away from The Etihad in search of regular game time. Bernardo Silva has been unhappy with Pep’s roulette and a man of his calibre doesn’t deserve to sit on the bench. He is also rumoured to leave the club this summer.
Formation and Tactics
Pep Guardiola has gone with a 4-3-3 formation for the entirety of his managerial career. He has trained the City players to be able to play anywhere across the front 3. We often see winger Ferran Torres playing as the number 9 while midfielder Phil Foden has played in midfield and on both wings. A player like Jack Grealish fits perfectly in this Man City side as he can be deployed on the wings or play in midfield.
We will have to wait and see which players Pep names for each game because each starting XI would mean a superstar has been left out on the bench.

After breaking the British transfer record on Jack Grealish, Man City are most likely to retain the Premier League title. Manchester United has strengthened their squad, Liverpool has all players fully fit, and Chelsea will possibly sign Lukaku. This means the race for the Premier League medal is going to be an interesting one, but the Cityzens might just have the edge.
They are also one of the favourites to win the UCL but with PSG acquiring the services of Ramos, Hakimi, Donnarumma, and Wijnaldum and Messi rumoured to join the club, they might fall short to the French giants.
Nevertheless, the season is going to be thrilling as we will witness a strong Manchester City side compete for the treble. UCL and Premier League trophy for City or is Pep finally getting sacked, it is surely going to be an interesting ride.
