The national cricket team of India always have had some amazing top batting lineup. Some of the most successful opening batsmen of India include the names of legendary cricketers such as Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag. Another such successful batsman is the current opener of India, Shikhar Dhawan. He has always been in his top form in the game. But does the Indian team have a player who can replace Shikhar Dhawan and is he Devdutt Padikkal? Let’s see.
Shikhar Dhawan also known as the Gabbar of the Indian team was born on 5 December 1985. He is a left-handed batsman and in first-class cricket, he plays for Delhi. He played for Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals for many years in the IPL. He has several records clutched under his name. Some of them are:
- Fastest Indian to reach 3000 ODI runs
- Leading run-scorer at 2013 Champions Trophy, 2015 World Cup, and 2017 Champions Trophy.
- Fastest Indian to reach 4000 ODI runs in December 2017
- Awarded the ‘Player of the Tournament’ for his performance in the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy.
- Scored the fastest century against Australia by any batsman on Test debut in March 2013 at Mohali.
Even though Dhawan has played some amazing knocks in various ODI or T20 innings, he has been out of form in the test format of the game. He played his last test match in 2018 against England.
Who is Devdutt Padikkal?
Devdutt Padikkal is an Indian cricketer who is part of the Karnataka team in domestic cricket and who plays for Royal Challengers Banglore in the Indian Premier League(IPL). He has also played for India under-19 team and recently made his international debut for team India in July 2021. He scored 473 runs in 15 matches for Royal Challengers Banglore in his debut IPL season. In IPL 2021, Padikkal played an outstanding knock of 101 runs not out against Rajasthan Royals and helped his team beat the opponent by ten wickets.
Can Devdutt Padikkal replace Shikhar Dhawan?
Padikkal has not had enough exposure to international cricket as he made his debut just a month back. But if you look at his overall stats in domestic cricket or even IPL, he has some great numbers going. He has an average of 33.4 and a strike rate of 131.8 in IPL, an average of 41.8, and a strike rate of 145 in T20. He is the player to watch at the remaining fixtures of the IPL tournament which will commence in September in UAE.
What Virender Sehwag has to say about Devdutt Padikkal?
The former Indian batsman Virender Sehwag has some huge praises for Devdutt Padikkal and has expressed that he has the potential to replace Shikhar Dhawan when he retires. The former batsman was hugely impressed by the young batsman’s performance for RCB in IPL as he smashed his maiden IPL century in the 2021 edition.
“I want to see him perform because the way he played a couple of innings, struck a century in the IPL, we saw some brilliant batting. When Shikhar Dhawan goes, he would be the right replacement for him. The only thing is that I want these Indian youngsters to first get opportunities in the sub-continent, because then when he goes to England, Australia or South Africa, there is confidence behind him.” said Sehwag in an interview with Cricbuzz.
So the more matches Devdutt Padikkal gets to play on an international level, the more it will be beneficial for him. The more experience he gets will help to boost his self-confidence which will reflect in his game. I am sure if he keeps his batting form consistent we all will be able to witness some amazing knocks by the 21-year-old in the near future. After all, the youth is the future. Hence Devdutt Padikkal can replace Shikhar Dhawan. What do you think?
