Barcelona hosted their very first match in their La Liga campaign against Real Sociedad in their home ground: Camp Nou. It is for the first time, the Catalans played a match without Messi, not in their squad. The club lost its football legend to PSG after failing to sign him due to the new salary cap introduced by La Liga.
Barcelona finished 3rd in their last season losing two top spots over the Madrid Giants. On the other hand, Real Sociedad finished 5th in their last La Liga campaign and secured their spot in the Europa League this season.
They started their La Liga campaign against each other where Barcelona played home against Real Sociedad.
Barcelona was quite strong up to the 70th minute not allowing Sociedad to score any goal, but right after the 70th minute La Real got back into the match and had a few nervous moments late into the match by suffering late into the injury time.
Barcelona set the first 30 seconds, by putting their performance very fast, playing long balls and without losing any possession to their opponent. That’s how Neto found Memphis Depay by playing a 50-yard long ball down the field and the Danish winger Martin Braithwaite netted the ball by firing a shot and thus helping Depay secure an assist against his name.
Barca was playing extremely good football yesterday. Making two to three touches before passing the ball to their teammates and someone making a run into the space. Barca was found quite impressive yesterday, with a flow in their attack. This is rarely seen under Ronald Koeman.
Barca was excellent without the ball as well, pressing high up the pitch and controlling Real Sociedad’s counter-attacks as well. The Catalans got two first-half goals showing their dominance in the game. They opened their score-sheet with Gerard Pique converting a cross by Memphis Depay into the goal. Adding that, Braithwaite converted the assist by De Jong and added to the score-sheet making it 2-0 for Barcelona.
Real Sociedad started their second-half fight against Barcelona with two early substitutions and converted their game with a lot of intensity and high pressure, thus creating two solid chances into the first 10 minutes of the next half.
The away team did not truly put any dangerous chances against Barcelona, and the home team seemed to have pulled off the game by scoring a third from the foot of Braithwaite. The team represented an extraordinary football from the left-wing. Thus making it 3-0 for Barcelona and Braithwaite securing his second on the score-sheet.
After the one-hour mark, The Catalans relaxed a bit where La Real grew into the game and scored two for their team, thus making it 3-2. Things got exciting within 3 minutes as Lobete netted the ball after a beautiful assist and run by Barrenetxea. The second for La Real came from the foot of Oyarzabal as he scored a brilliant free-kick.
Barca needed a fourth to kill off the game, and they got it from a counter-attack led by the team and a tap-in from Sergi Roberto assisted by Braithwaite. The final whistle being blown marked an encouraging performance from both teams.
