The European Champions Chelsea started their Premier League campaign off a great start against London rivals Crystal Palace. They comfortably beat the Eagles 3 goals to nil at Stamford Bridge.
In the starting XI’s Crystal Palace kept the same XI as they had in their last pre-season game. For Chelsea, as Kante was injured in their Super Cup final so Chelsea’s new no.8 Kovacic started, Captain Cesar Azpilicueta was there in the place of Callum Hudson-Odoi, Christensen in place of Kurt Zouma, Christian Pulisic in place of Hakim Ziyech and Mason Mount in place of Kai Havertz. Even after the heroics in the penalty shootout, Thomas Tuchel went on with Edouard Mendy as their goalkeeper. As the match started, Tuchel’s Blues were in full attacking mind as they had many shots on target but they couldn’t finish well. In the first 20 minutes, they had more possession as compared to Crystal Palace, as a result in the 27th minute Mason Mount gave a freekick to Chelsea just outside the box of Crystal Palace and Marcos Alonso made the most of it by scoring a glorious freekick and give Chelsea the lead. Just before half-time in the 40th minute, Christian Pulisic scored from a rebound and doubled the Chelsea lead. Werner tried to score but it hit the defender and as a result, the ball went on Pulisic’s legs only for him to score.
As the 2nd half started, Chelsea was again in a firm position as they had more than 60 percent of the position for most of the time. Even though keeping more possession, more shots on target, they still couldn’t find the net in the 2nd half. In the 58th minute, after a sequence of passes on the left flank, Chelsea found a breach on the right-hand side as their Premier League debutant and Academy product Trevor Cholabah scored a screamer in front of the Chelsea fans. This made Chalobah very emotional as he was in tears after scoring his debut goal for a club where he’s been since he was 8 years old. In 2016, he made a promise to his late mom that one day he’ll make it to the top flight and he did! He also dedicated his debut goal to his late mother. After this goal, the whole of Stamford Bridge was in awe of his goal and also gave applause.
Later as the match went on Chelsea created chances but couldn’t do well in the final 3rd. For Crystal Palace, it was a very frustrating day for all the players, especially Wilfred Zaha who was one of the most fouled players but according to the referee be wasn’t fouled at sometimes. On the other hand, Patrick Viera gave a lot of chances to youngsters and some of the academy products also got their debut against Chelsea.
Mason mount and Trevoh Chalobah when they were young and at the Chelsea academy. (Right) today against Crystal Palace. DREAMS DO COME TRUE!
Overall Chelsea dominated Crystal Palace with ease and the eagles had only 4 shots out of which only 1 was on target as compared to Chelsea who had 13 shots out of which 6 were on target.
