Correa to the rescue for Atletico again.
Atletico Madrid won full points in a narrow 1-0 win over Elche in the second week of La Liga at the Wanda Metropolitano.
Captain Koke paraded the LaLiga trophy to the 25,000 fans at the stadium before kickoff in the first Atletico home game with supporters since March 2020, although the party atmosphere was dampened as the hosts made a poor start to the game.
The first half was tight and without Suarez, it was difficult for Atletico to break down Elche’s defence. In the 7th minute, Saul Nighez came close to scoring for the hosts when his shot went narrowly wide of goal.
Elche didn’t just shut back and defend, they took advantage of the sloppy passes and went for counters, but Atletico didn’t provide an opening with their tight defensive formation.
The hosts finally scored in the 39th minute when Angel Correa received an assist from compatriot Rodrigo de Paul who made his starting XI debut. Correa caught the ball past goalkeeper Kiko Casilla and with Little control, he slotted the ball into Elche’s net.
Correa scored both of Atletico’s goals in their 2-1 win at Celta Vigo on the opening weekend and is responsible for 100% of Diego Siemone’s side’s goals so far this season.
In the second half, Atletico came close to doubling their lead in the 49th minute when Gimenez’s header that saw Koke’s corner was parried by Casilla.
Five minutes later, Carrasco came close to scoring but Casilla made a brilliant save again.
But Elche who secured survival on the final day of last season took the game to the champions for most of the second period and had more
possession and more chances even if they never truly managed to trouble Atleti keeper Jan Oblak.
Marcone, Guti and Fidel never looked decisive on the ball and they failed to find those through passes when they dominated possession. De Paul and Kondogbia had a pretty good game and the two combined well in the Midfield alongside Koke and Lemar.
The defending champions have a lot to improve and Diego Someone will be a bit worried as his side never looked dominating on the ball.
The result made Atletico top the standings with a collection of six points from two matches. Elche is ranked 16th with one point.
