London is BLUE : Arsenal vs Chelsea match review

The match was set. It was the London Derby. It was Arsenal vs Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium in London. Just before the match, Arsenal introduced their new signing, their new no.8 Martin Ødegaard who was bought for 30 million from Real Madrid. Since the pandemic it was the first time the Emirates was full of supporters.

For Arsenal, their coach Mikel Arteta chose a 4-2-3-1 as Gabriel Martinelli started up front instead of Lacazette who missed this game due to a positive covid test along with Ben White who was also tested positive. Aubameyang was on the bench for Arsenal. On the other hand, for Chelsea, their coach Thomas Tuchel continued his 3-4-3 formation where their new signing Romelu Lukaku started up front instead of Timo Werner. Kai Havertz replaced the covid positive Christian Pulisic and Reece James started by replacing young defender Trevoh Chalobah who had an impressive outing agaisnt Crystal Palace.

From the 1st minute of the match it was clearly seen that Chelsea were controlling the game. Due to bad defensive approach from Arsenal, spaces were there and as a result Lukaku scored an easy tap-in which gave Chelsea the lead in just 15 minutes. There was a lot of space seen on the right hand side as Buyako Saka wouldn’t track back Reece as a result, defender Kieran Tierney had to handle Reece James as well as Mason Mount on the right, which was much much difficult for the Scottish defender. On the left hand side as well it was only Rob Holding who needed to handle Marcos Alonso and Kai Havertz. The midfield of Arsenal was not being able to help the defense. In the 1st half Saka easily went down on a shoulder push of Reece James, the referee saw that it was a dive and so he didn’t gave a penalty. Edou Mendy is not a ball-playing keeper and it was seen as he almost gave away the ball to the Arsenal players.

Another goal came on in the 35th minute as there were spaces, Reece James made the most of it and scored a beautiful goal on the top left side which gave Chelsea a 2 nil lead just before half-time. In the first 45 minutes, both Mason Mount and Reece James had more shots on target than the whole Arsenal team. In the whole match Chelsea had an xG of 3.84 as compared to Arsenal which was 0.44. In the 2nd half Arsenal also then created a lot of chances which were on target, but couldn’t find a way past Chelsea keeper Edou Mendy who was outstanding with his saves and his overall performance was just brilliant. Emil Smith-Rowe was the only player who helped his team in the defense as well in the attack. Granit Xhaka was equally important for his team as he being a midfielder he helped his team a lot in the defense.

Reece James had 1 goal and 1 assist in the match while Edou Mendy made several saves which helped his team a lot. Romelu Lukaku in his 2nd stint as a Chelsea player had a very dominant performance and had a very good outing and he also took the Man of the Match award. But should have been given to Reece James?
