Who are the possible underdogs for the exciting IPL 2021?

Indian Premier League is one of the favorite tournaments to watch for cricket fans all around the world. The competition between the eight teams of the league is always nail-biting and there are many favorites of the fans for the winning trophy. Every year the IPL is held in India but this year due to Covid-19 the remaining matches are being shifted to the United Arab Emirates. As there are some strong contenders for the tournament title, there are also a few teams who have a little chance to win or are considered underdogs.

Punjab Kings

Punjab Kings who were previously named Kings XI Punjab is led by KL Rahul. In the 2014 season, they topped the league table and finished as the runners-up which is their best in all the IPL seasons. Other than that the team has made it to only one other playoff in the first season of IPL in 2008 where they lost to Chennai Super Kings in the semifinal. They finished at 6th position in IPL 2020. In the first half of IPL 2021, they have played 8 matches in total which consists of 3 wins and 5 losses, and are currently placed at the 6thposition. Even though the teams have some great batting line-up consisting of KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, Chris Gayle the team is failing to perform overall which is leading to losses and decreasing their chances to win the title.

Kolkata Knight Riders

Kolkata Knight Riders or KKR as fans like to call is led by captain Eoin Morgan for IPL 2021. They are two-time IPL champions winning the title in 2012 and 2014. They also hold a record for the longest winning streak of 14 wins by any Indian team in T20 format. Even though they have some good records in the previous IPL seasons they have failed to qualify for the playoffs for the past two years. In the first half of IPL 2021, they have played 7 matches in total and are victorious in only 2 matches and have lost 5 matches. In the points table, they are currently in 7th position. Even though the team is well-balanced in all forms of players, they have failed to achieve some wins.

Rajasthan Royals

Rajasthan Royals is led by Sanju Samson for IPL 2021. The team had won the inaugural edition of the IPL in 2008 under Shane Warne. The team had secured 7th and 8th place in IPL 2019 and 2020 respectively. Even though the team has good cricketers like Ajinkya Rahane, Sanju Samson, and bowlers like Jaydev Unadkat, Mustafizur Rahman the team has been inconsistent in performing. More than 4 overseas important players such as Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler, Jofra Archer, Andrew Tye will miss the rest of the IPL 2021 reducing the chances of Rajasthan Royals winning the title. In IPL 2021, the team has played 7 matches in total out of which 3 turned out to be victorious and suffered 4 losses. The team is placed in the 5th position with 6 points in total.

Royal Challengers Banglore

Royal Challengers Banglore is played under Virat Kohli as the captain. The team has never won the IPL title but has finished runners-up thrice between 2009 and 2016. The team is also known as “underachievers” for their lack of success even though the team consists of some notable players. They finished at 8th position in IPL 2019 and made it to the playoffs in IPL 2020. In the first half of the IPL 2021, RCB has played 7 matches and won 5 out of it and lost 2 matches securing them at the 3rd position. Even though the team has won a couple of matches in the first half, the tables can turn in the second half based on their previous record in IPL seasons.

The second half of IPL 2021 is scheduled to commence from 19th September. The first match of the second half will be played between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. As the days of the IPL 2021 season are coming near, every cricket fan is excited and curious as to who will win IPL 2021. What do you think?
