Kun Aguero: the best or one of the best Premier League Strikers?

The date was 28th July 2011. Manchester City was 1-0 up at the Etihad Against the Swans. But Mancini had prepared for a rampage. He sent off a newly signed Argentine Striker. Sergio ended the match with 2 goals and 1 assist to his name and was about to engrave his name in the Premier League’s history within the next decade. Sergio Aguero is an icon close to the hearts of Manchester City fans worldwide. Thirty minutes was all it took for the Argentine to introduce himself into Premier League back in 2011. He possesses the best minutes per goal ratio in Premier League history, with 275 appearances, 184 goals, and 47 assists, and stands fourth in the all-time top goalscorers in Premier League history after Alan Shearer, Wayne Rooney, and Andy Cole. 

There have been only a few strikers who have been a match for Aguero’s calibre and poaching abilities. Alan Shearer, Wayne Rooney and Thierry Henry are the ones whose names always come up along with Aguero while discussing the greatest strikers of the PL.

  1. Alan Shearer 

 Alan Shearer spent his entire career within the Premier League. Starting with Southampton initially, his move to Blackburn Rovers in 1992 accorded perfectly with the introduction of the fashionable Premier League. Shearer spent four years with Blackburn Rovers, scoring 112 Premier League goals in 138 appearances. His goalscoring output was commendable, which headed Blackburn to the Premier League title in the 1994-1995 season. 

2. Wayne Rooney 

Wayne Rooney is one of the best attackers in Premier League history. He has spent a total of 16 years in the Premier League. Rooney always astonished the audience with his performance.

Rooney came into the limelight after scoring a wondergoal with Everton against Arsenal and progressed on to measure up to the hype after scoring a record number of goals for Manchester United and England, winning every club trophy available including five Premier League titles and also the Champions League. Rooney together with his versatile form of playing always within the talks of pundits. In his 13 seasons with Manchester United, Rooney scored a record of 183 goals in 393 appearances. Returning to Everton in 2017, Rooney spent a year with the Toffees, scoring 10 goals. This took his overall Premier League tally to 208 goals in 491 appearances.

3. Sergio Aguero

The overseas player has ruled the Premier League for over a decade and helped Manchester city win four Premier League titles.

During his campaign, he won Golden boot in 2014-15, the Argentinian has scored a record 12 PL hat-tricks and is one of only five players to score five goals in a single match. He is the leading overseas goalscorer with 184 strikes, Aguero has the best minutes per goal ratio in the Premier League, finding the target every 108 minutes. He’s also the top overseas scorer with the highest goals in the PL.

4. Thierry Henry

One of the biggest Legend Premier League has ever produced. Signed in 1999 from Juventus. In his first seven games with Arsenal, he didn’t score, but after setting his game on a great level, he never looked back. He was a phenomenal Centre Forward and his eye for goal and blistering pace allowed Arsene Wenger to deploy him as a striker. Henry remains the only player to have won four Golden Boot in Premier League. He finished with the strike rate of a goal every 121 minutes and most important member of Arsenal.

Aguero left City and signed for Barcelona in 2021. But in his 10 years in the Premier League, he smashed records, won trophies and left a legacy that will be hard to match. He was the one who got City their first Premier League title in 2012 and led them to four more within his tenure. To achieve so much within such a short period of time is a massive feat in itself. His achievements and abilities are comparable only to a few like Henry and Rooney.

One thing is for sure we have witnessed phenomenal strikers down the year and Aguero is one of them. He is a City legend and will forever be one of PL’s most prolific attackers.
