Delhi Capitals Team Analysis

Delhi Capitals

Delhi Capitals is one of the most popular and successful teams over the past couple of years. Although the 2020 IPL finalists came up short against Mumbai Indians last year, that was their most successful performance ever, making it to the IPL finals for the first time in the 13-year history of the tournament.

Delhi Capitals have made their mark this year as well, as they ended the first half of the 2021 season, finishing at the top of the table before the season was indefinitely suspended.

Throughout the first 13 editions of the IPL, Delhi Daredevils as it was known for over a decade enjoyed mixed success in the tournament. It started as a successful team, being one of the only two teams to qualify into the playoffs in both the 2008 and 2009 seasons, finishing the 2009 season at the top of the points table, but failing to make it into the finals.

This was followed by 2 rough seasons, where Delhi failed to qualify, including finishing last in the 2011 season. They bounced back in 2012, finishing first in the points table, but lost back-to-back matches in the playoffs and finished 3rd in that year’s tournament.

This was followed by an infamous streak of not qualifying for the playoffs for 6 tournaments between 2013 and 2018. Between 2013 and 2014, Delhi won only 5 out of 30 matches, finishing at the bottom of the table on both occasions.

They ended their streak by finishing third in the 2019 season and winning their first-ever match in the playoffs after going 0-4 for a decade. This amazing performance was followed by their best performance ever in the 2020 season, making it into the finals. Kagiso Rabada finished the 2020 season winning Delhi its first purple cap for taking the most wickets in the entire season, and Shikhar Dhawan just missed out on winning an orange cap as he finished as the second-highest run-scorer of the season.

Delhi Capitals is the only team along with Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad to qualify for the playoffs in both the 2019 and the 2020 seasons of the IPL. If it continues to play this season as it did in the first half, it will be the only team along with Mumbai to add the 2021 season playoffs to its achievements as well.

In this year’s tournament, Delhi currently stands at the top of the points table with 12 points, losing only 2 matches, one of them by just 1 run. As we have seen that although Team Delhi stumbled in the middle seasons of the IPL, it has now made a resurgence as a team, with several powerful batsmen like Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw and bowlers like Rabada and Anrich Nortje, not to mention the captain Rishabh Pant who also displayed his skills for the last couple of years.
