In this summer’s transfer window, Messi’s move to PSG came as a shocker as nobody predicted that Messi would ever leave Barcelona. Barcelona failed to register Messi and was forced to loan out Antoine Griezmann to reduce their wage budget due to years of financial mismanagement.
With Messi and Griezmann leaving, the Catalans started their season without their top 2 goal scorers from last season. Luuk de Jong was signed on the deadline day as a temporary replacement for Griezmann. However, the former Sevilla man was lacklustre on his debut against Bayern Munich. His lack of pace and work rate was intolerable for the fans as he was constantly whistled whenever he made an error. An overall poor display got him substituted in the 66th minute.
The Dutch striker had a golden opportunity to redeem himself when Barca was one goal down against Granada but missed an open goal from 4 yards. Barcelona was unable to break down the Granada defence, which prompted Ronald Koeman to change his tactics as Barcelona changed their gameplay and started putting crosses in the box by bringing their defenders forward. Barcelona finally got their equaliser but fans didn’t like the unusual change in gameplay as Barcelona is famous for its style of playing.
On Thursday, Barca again dropped points against Cadiz as their attackers weren’t able to provide the finishing touch when chances were created. Luuk de Jong’s presence never looked like a threat in the first half and Memphis was surrounded quickly by the Cadiz defenders every time he went forward.

Ansu Fati, Aguero, Dembele and Braithwaite, all being injured the fans hoped that Memphis would replicate his hot form for the Netherlands at Barca. But after the international break, things have changed. Memphis looks promising but seems lost in front of the goal.
He can take on defenders and currently he is Barca’s only attacking threat when going forward. His tally of 2 goals and 1 assist remains constant after no goal or assists in the last 2 games. Memphis has great ambitions and wants to win trophies as he suggested in an interview that he would tattoo the trophies he wins at Barca. In another interview, Luuk de Jong spoke about how Memphis and he has a really good connection and would love to contribute the same for Barca as they did at PSV.
This statement turned out to be true as Luuk de Jong provided a fantastic low cross into the six-yard box for Memphis but, the latter completely miss-timed his shot as he missed a golden opportunity. Memphis was again picked out by his Dutch teammate Frenkie de Jong, but he opted to pass instead of shooting which was the wrong option.
The final and big chance of the Barca-Cadiz game was in the 3rd minute of injury time when Barca blocked a shot and countered as Pique slipped a pass for Memphis, who agonisingly dragged his shot wide of the far post.
Koeman would be majorly disappointed with both strikers as he was the key figure in their transfer to Barcelona. Memphis and Luuk de Jong still have games to play as Ansu Fati could be the latest to join them. The Champions League returns next week as Barcelona play Benfica before their return to Wanda Metropolitano to face Atletico Madrid in a crucial Laliga game.
