Sunrisers Hyderabad became the first team to be knocked out of the tournament after they lost to Chennai Super Kings on Thursday and will now take on the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2nd of doubleheader games on Sunday in Dubai.
The Knight Riders won the return fixture against the SRH by 10 runs in a game held at Chennai earlier this year.
SRH slumped to their 9th defeat in this IPL when they lost by 6 wickets to CSK the other night in Sharjah. It was the same story for them after they were put in to bat by CSK.
Courtesy of a slow-paced 44 off 46 and cameos from youngsters Abishek Sharma, Abdul Samad, the Kane Williamson led side reached a paltry 134/7. Though the bowlers were on the mark, CSK managed to sneak through the target in the last over of the game. Jason Holder picked 3/27.
Kolkata Knight Riders received a jolt after their 5 wicket loss to Punjab Kings in their last fixture. After a great start to their batting from the likes of Tripathi, and Venkatesh Iyer, KKR failed to build on the start.
As a result of some tight bowling from PBKS, the Knight Riders were restricted to 165. In the chase, KL Rahul’s half-century took the PBKS home despite quite a lot of drama in the end.
The Knight Riders have 10 points and can progress to the play-offs but they are in a tangle with Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings for that 4th spot on the IPL 2021 points table.
And Sunrisers could be a perfect opponent for them to garner that vital 2 points. The Kane Williamson-led side is out of play-off reckoning and thus could be low on motivation and urge to dish out a commanding effort.
All the Hyderabad outfit can hope for is to play the role of party spoilers but do they have the mental presence to do that is the question.
Venue: Dubai International Stadium, Dubai
Pitch and Weather
Pitches in Dubai have been contrasting. While a few stayed throughout the course of the match, making run-scoring easy, the other one slowed in the 2nd innings.
Pacers might get some assistance with the new ball, while spinners also will be handy. The weather is likely to be sunny with the temperature touching to the late 30s even though it is a 6.00 PM start.
Date & Time: October 3, 6.00 PM Local time, 7.30 PM IST.
Probable Playing XIs
Sunrisers Hyderabad had yet another poor batting performance and the experienced batters Kane Williamson, Jason Roy failed to build on the form that they had from the previous game. Also, the middle-order couldn’t do much after a poor start. However, the bowlers put in a valiant effort in their defense of 135.
Knight Riders will desperately want the middle-order players Eoin Morgan and Dinesh Karthik to step up if they are to move to the next round. They would ideally need an extra bowler and we may see Shakib getting a game.
Kolkata Knight Riders: Venkatesh Iyer, Shubman Gill, Rahul Tripathi, Eoin Morgan (Captain), Nitish Rana, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Sunil Narine, Tim Southee, Varun Chakravarthy, Lockie Ferguson, Shivam Mavi.
Sunrisers Hyderabad: Jason Roy, Wriddhiman Saha (Wk), Kane Williamson (Captain), Manish Pandey, Abhishek Sharma, Priyam Garg, Jason Holder, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rashid Khan, Siddharth Kaul, Sandeep Sharma.
Fantasy Team Prediction:
Jason Roy, Kane Williamson, Wridhiman Saha, Rahul Tripathi, Nitish Rana, Venkatesh Iyer (C), Jason Holder (VC), Rashid Khan, Sunil Narine, Varun Chakravarthy, Shivam Mavi.
The Sunrisers Hyderabad have nothing to lose or gain from this match as they are already out of the play off race as the bottom-placed side. However, the Knight Riders have everything to gain from this match as they are still very much in the mix for a berth in the knockouts. That sheer desperation will make the KKR favourite for this match.
