Robert Lewandowski has been an absolute phenomenon ever since his move to Bayern Munich from fierce rivals Borussia Dortmund in a controversial free transfer. He is the Bundesliga’s all-time foreign-born goal-scorer. He even broke Bayern legend Gerd Muller’s record of 40 goals in a single season by scoring 41 goals in just 29 appearances last season.
It’s safe to say he has been on fire recently. He won the UEFA Champions League in the 2019/20 season along with the formality that is the Bundesliga and Germany’s domestic trophies. He went on to win more the FIFA Club World Cup, Bundesliga, and the DFL Supercup the following season, completing two seasons of absolute dominance both in Europe and domestically.
His name has been rightly put into conversations for one of the greatest individual honors in football, the Ballon d’Or.
The 2020 Ballon D’or ceremony was canceled as a result of the Coronavirus Pandemic. It was unfortunate as Lewandowski was widely projected to be the winner after the spectacular season he had.
But in a twist to the story, recent reports have claimed that the 2020 Ballon D’or will, in fact, be awarded to the Poland Forward.
The 2021 Ballon D’or is a different story. Though Lewa had a personally fantastic season, he will be up against Leo Messi who was imperious as always despite Barcelona’s fall from grace, though he managed to win the Copa del Rey with the Catalan Club and finally won an international trophy that had eluded him for so long by leading Argentina to victory in the Copa America.
Messi notched up 38 goals and 14 assists as opposed to Lewandowski’s 52 goals and 8 assists. Due to the Argentine great winning an international trophy, he will probably be the winner of this edition of Ballon D’or.
If the reports of Lewandowski winning the 2020 Ballon D’or is indeed true, then he might finally receive his flowers.
