Sterling or Pulisic: Who would be a better fit for Xavi’s Barca?

Following Ronald Koeman’s dismissal, as any newly appointed manager, Xavi will be keen to sign new players in this winter transfer window or the summer of 2022. Xavi is thought to be keen to revamp the club’s attack. Barcelona has won just four of their first 12 games and is as close to relegation battling teams as they are to the top four in the points table. Xavi believes that the club has lost its on field-identity which brought Barcelona so much success during his time at Barca as a player.

The former Al-Sadd manager is particularly keen to bolster his attacking options in wide areas. Xavi has expressed interest in Raheem Sterling and Christian Pulisic, as both players are struggling for regular action under their respective managers.

Sterling has already expressed his frustration due to lack of game time and has hinted at a move outside of England. According to reports, Sterling is open to joining the LaLiga giants when the transfer window opens in January. But his huge wages and Man City’s proposal of a loan with obligation to buy option might break this move.

Sterling has failed to replicate his form of 18/19 season in the past couple of years which has resulted in him being benched on multiple occasions this season. Jack Grealish’s arrival is also one of the reasons for his lack of game time but no doubt his effectiveness has fallen off since last year. The Englishman has failed to return the trust to his manager with poor performances.

Sterling’s huge wage demands could be an issue for Barca plus the City’s proposal of a loan with obligation to buy is not what Barcelona is looking for. If City’s conditions remain the same then Barcelona will look for other options. Sterling’s recent form is concerning and poor compared to other players on the wish list. According to Sport, Pulisic has been identified as a potential alternative should England International’s move break down.

Christian Pulisic is a promising talent and the best option among these two. His goalscoring return from injury as the United States defeated Mexico in World Cup qualifiers is proof that without injuries a player of his calibre could be lethal. Barcelona has also shortlisted Hakim Ziyech and Callum Hudson-Odoi, but Christian Pulisic remains to be a top priority.

The 23-year-old has struggled for game time at Stamford Bridge so far this season. In a Chelsea team with numerous options in attack, players like Ziyech, Hudson Odoi and Christian Pulisic have struggled to make their mark in the playing XI.

Pulisic wasn’t a regular starter in Thomas Tuchel’s team last season but whenever called upon in action, he has delivered for the team. His ball control and messiesque dribbling are mesmerizing to watch. Barcelona fans would be delighted if the American signs for Barca and has the qualities and attributes to build his legacy at a club like Barca. With Xavi in charge of a new project, Barcelona will try to convince players to be stars of this project alongside a fresh group of young and talented individuals.

However, Barcelona doesn’t have enough cash to buy a world-class talent at the moment so would only be able to sign the former Borussia Dortmund star on loan. Barcelona believes the competition for minutes in Chelsea’s attack could lure Pulisic to Barca in the winter transfer market, and they are also watching both Callum Hudson-Odoi and Hakim Ziyech for that very reason.

Having already signed Dani Alves, a striker and a winger are on Xavi’s January shopping list, but with the club having less than £10m to spend, buying players on loan remains the only option.
