Mumbai Indians, the five-time IPL champions, have retained skipper Rohit Sharma, as well as Kieron Pollard, Jasprit Bumrah, and Suryakumar Yadav.
The retention list for the IPL 2022 season has been released, with most teams keeping four players, which was the maximum restriction allowed by the Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI).
Two more franchises will be added to the IPL in 2022. (from Ahmedabad and Lucknow). The majority of players will be auctioned off, bringing another grand auction in the cash-rich tournament, similar to the one held in IPL 2011.
- Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Mumbai Indians, has been a standout player in the Indian Premier League (IPL). In the past, the senior Indian cricketer played for the Deccan Chargers (2008-10). Rohit has the most IPL titles (6), five of which he won with Mumbai Indians. In the competition, he holds a number of outstanding records.
MI’s First Priority
Rohit is the IPL’s fourth-highest run scorer.
He has 5,230 runs at an average of 31.31 from 200 matches thus far. In the cash-rich competition, the top-order batsman has one century and 39 fifties. His highest score is 109*. Along with MS Dhoni, he is the only player in the IPL to appear in 200 or more games.
Rohit has won five IPL titles with the Mumbai Indians. MI won the IPL in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020 under his leadership. It’s worth noting that this is the most ever by an IPL team. In 2009, Rohit won the title with the Deccan Chargers.
- Jasprit Bumrah
Another player who is critical to MI’s success. Boom Boom, who took out Virat Kohli in the IPL for the first time in 2013, has come a long way since his first season in 2013 and is now one of Mumbai’s key match-winners.
MI’s Gun Bowler
He is a Mumbai Indians player through and through, having been found and groomed by the organisation. Former India coach John Wright identified him during a Mumbai Indians talent discovery programme in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 event, and he ascended quickly through the ranks under the mentorship of Sri Lankan pace legend Lasith Malinga.
In IPL 2020, he got 27 wickets to lead Mumbai to victory, and this year, despite the team failing to qualify for the play-offs, he took 21 wickets.
- Kieron Pollard
Pollard is a key member of the Mumbai Indians’ locker room, and he has captained the squad while Rohit Sharma has been sidelined.
The Big Man
The West Indian T20 captain remains one of the most dangerous batsmen in T20 cricket, and his ability to clear boundaries at will allows him to close games quickly.
Pollard has been a one-team man since joining the Mumbai Indians in 2010, spending the previous 12 years with the franchise. In 2020, he was instrumental in MI’s title victory, scoring 268 runs with a mind-boggling strike rate of 191.
Pollard has made vital contributions with the bat lower down the order, with 200-plus runs in his last three seasons.
Overall in the IPL, he has scored 3,268 runs in 178 runs at a strike rate of nearly 150.
- Suryakumar Yadav
SKY was called up to the Indian team due to his outstanding batsmanship over the last two seasons.
MI’s Trustable Man
MI paid Rs 3.2 crore (Rs 32 million) for the right-hander during the 2018 IPL Players Auction, and he has certainly lived up to his billing.
Suryakumar’s batting improved dramatically after joining MI from KKR. In his first season with MI in 2018, he hit over 500 runs, including four 50s, and he backed that up with 400-plus runs in the next two seasons.
He hit 317 runs with a strikeout rate of 143 this season. He is a vital part of MI’s batting lineup, and taking him out would be unthinkable for the five-time winners.
Some top players MI should target for auction 2022
- Shreyas Iyer
Rohit Sharma will be the captain of the Mumbai Indians (MI) for at least next few years. However, his age is catching up to him, and the franchise must consider a qualified successor. Shreyas Iyer, a local player and India’s middle-order hitter, may be a perfect buy for the MI Paltan.
In the last 2-3 years, the 26-year-old has performed admirably for his previous franchise, the Delhi Capitals (DC). His ties to the city of Mumbai may be another factor in MI’s decision to pursue Iyer at the IPL mega auction in 2022.
- Ben Stokes
The Mumbai-based franchise is in desperate need of someone to fill this position after losing excellent all-rounders like Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, and Jimmy Neesham. Despite having Pollard in the side, Rohit Sharma and his teammates could go crazy for Ben Stokes in the IPL 2022.
The Englishman is one of the best all-rounders in the game’s history, having excelled in all formats. In the 15th season of the competition, he will prove to be a critical buy at whichever franchise he visits.
- Mujeeb ur Rahman
After removing Rahul Chahar from the roster, the five-time champions are in desperate need of quality spin bowlers. Mujeeb ur Rahman, an Afghan spinner, will be ideal to fill this place for the Indians.
In numerous T20 leagues throughout the world, the teenager has plagued some of the best batsmen. As a result, there’s little reason why MI shouldn’t go for a brilliant boy like Mujeeb at the major auction.
