Delhi Capitals Analysis: Retained Players & Targets

The Delhi Capitals have released their list of players that would be retained for the upcoming Indian Premier League season in 2022. Rishabh Pant, the wicket-keeper batsman, has been retained by the franchise and is expected to remain as the captain.

Prithvi Shaw, the franchise’s opening batter, has also been a crucial gear in the wheel over the years. Axar Patel and Anrich Nortje have been chosen by the Delhi Capitals ahead of the mega-auctions over Kagiso Rabada and Ravichandran Ashwin.

  • Rishabh Pant

Pant smashed records by striking a triple-hundred against Maharashtra and a scorching 48-ball century against Jharkhand in the 2016-17 first-class season, just a year after making his Ranji Trophy debut at the age of 18 in 2015.

The Swashbuckling Batsman

Pant announced his entrance in the IPL by scoring 97 runs off just 48 deliveries against Gujarat Lions in 2017. He finished IPL 2018 as the second highest run-scorer with 684 runs at a strike rate of 173.60, his greatest season to date. One of the season’s highlights was his stunning 128* at the Feroz Shah Kotla.

Pant comes into this edition of the tournament on the heels of a stellar international performance, and he’ll be eager to continue that for the Delhi Capitals.

  • Prithvi Shaw

In his first IPL season in 2018, the then 18-year-old impressed with his assured hitting approach, finishing with 245 runs in nine innings.

The Classy Youngster

He was called up to the national squad after his continuous performances for India A, and he made his debut against the West Indies in November 2018. Shaw hit 134 against the visitors at Rajkot to become the youngest Indian to score a Test century on debut. Shaw outperformed himself in the 2019 IPL season, scoring 353 runs, including a century. He was out for the majority of 2019 and early 2020 due to injuries.

  • Axar Patel

Axar Patel, a Gujarati bowling all-rounder, had signed his first IPL contract with Mumbai Indians in 2013, and a move to KXIP the following season cemented his status as a household name in the game.

The Impactful All-rounder

Axar was bought by Delhi Capitals for Rs 5 crore at the IPL auctions ahead of the 2019 season, making him the franchise’s second most expensive player. He was a regular in the KXIP line-up. Later, he was re-signed by the Delhi franchise for the IPL 2020 and 2021 seasons. The lanky all-rounder’s left-arm spin bowling was crucial for Delhi Capitals as they marched to the IPL 2020 final, and the franchise will be hoping for more of the same consistent performances this year.

  • Anrich Nortje

Anrich Nortje was brought in as a substitute player for DC in the 2020 edition, and what a brilliant move that was!

The Pace Battery

He not only wowed everyone with his blistering pace, registering the top four fastest balls of the competition, but he also picked up 22 wickets and formed an incredible bowling partnership with fellow Proteas paceman Kagiso Rabada that helped DC reach their first ever IPL final. As the Delhi Capitals try to make their imprint in the competition, the right-arm pacer will be anxious to make his presence felt once more.

Some top players DC should target for auction 2022

  • Jason Roy

Jason Roy, the England opener, has yet to receive his due in the Indian Premier League. For a few years, he’s been one of the most dangerous openers in limited-overs internationals.

However, in the Indian T20 league, he has only appeared in 13 games, scoring 329 runs at a strike rate of 129 with two half-centuries. In 2018, he scored his first fifty with an undefeated 91. He played for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) this year, replacing David Warner as opener near the conclusion of the season after missing the previous two. He’s got a lot more to give.

  • Harshal Patel

Harshal Patel will surely be in high demand at the upcoming big auction. And DC might be one of the franchises willing to go to great lengths to win him over. DC have had tremendous balance recently, but their death bowling has been a huge concern, and Harshal could be crucial in resolving that.

During the IPL 2021, Patel tied DJ Bravo for the most wickets in a season, with the majority of them coming in the death overs. Even with the Indian team, his slower balls have been devastating, and he has been consistent with his wicket-taking.

  • Ravi Bishnoi

Leggie Ravi Bishnoi, among the young spinners, appeared very promising and had a positive attitude. The 21-year-old has appeared in two IPL seasons with the Punjab Kings (PBKS), taking 12 wickets in each. Bishnoi’s cleverness foxed a few quality batters during the IPL 2021 in the UAE. He can be groomed for the future, and DC is well-versed in this area.
