On Tuesday, the nominations for the ICC Player of the Month (November) were announced, and they were based on performances in all formats, including matches from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021, which took place in the United Arab Emirates and Oman.
Australia’s David Warner and Pakistan’s Abid Ali, and New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee made the list. Pakistani left-arm spinner Anam Amin and Bangladeshi left-arm spinner Nahida Akter are in the race for the women’s award, as is West Indies all-rounder Haley Matthews, who is nominated for the second time.
Men’s Player of the Month Nominees
● David Warner, Australia
David Warner was chosen Player of the Tournament for his consistency and aggressive knocks during the T20 World Cup. In November, he hit two key fifties in the World Cup and a 49. He was named Player of the Match for his 89* against West Indies in Australia’s final group match. The innings, which lasted only 56 balls, featured nine fours and four sixes.
He followed that up with a half-century stand with Mitchell Marsh for the second wicket in the semi-final against Pakistan, establishing the framework for a victorious chase. He hit 53 in the final against New Zealand, and he and Marsh enjoyed another great partnership that guided them to an eight-wicket triumph.
● Tim Southee, New Zealand
In November, Tim Southee was a reliable wicket-taker for New Zealand, taking wickets in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021, the T20I series against India, and the Kanpur Test. He was economical in the T20 World Cup, taking six wickets in five games in November. He took four wickets as captain in the first two T20Is against India, including a three-for in the second T20I at Ranchi, with figures of 3/16 in four overs.
Southee was the standout of the New Zealand bowlers in a dramatic draw in Kanpur, taking eight wickets. He took 5/69 in the first innings, including vital wickets of Cheteshwar Pujara and Shreyas Iyer, and 3/75 in the second innings, dismissing Mayank Agarwal.
● Abid Ali, Pakistan
After scores of 133 and 91 in the opening match of their ICC World Test Championship (WTC) series against Bangladesh in Chittagong, Pakistan opener Abid Ali was named Player of the Match. Thanks to two century opening stand in both innings with partner Abdullah Shafique, he was instrumental in establishing the foundation for an eight-wicket triumph.
Women’s Player of the Month Nominees
● Nahida Akter, Bangladesh
During that time, Nahida took 13 wickets at an economy rate of 2.22 in four ODIs. Bangladesh claimed 11 wickets in a 3-0 series win over Zimbabwe, including five figures for 21 in the third match in Bulawayo. The spinner’s final two wickets came in a thrilling win against Pakistan in Harare during the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2021.
● Hayley Matthews, West Indies
Hayley Matthews, nominated alongside her captain Stafanie Taylor in July, receives her second nomination after a string of steady performances in four One-Day Internationals. She scored 141 runs and took nine wickets at a 13.11 average. In the series, she was a standout performer in the win over Pakistan, scoring 57 runs and taking three wickets for 31 runs in the first game and then getting four wickets for 26 runs in the second.
● Anam Amin, Pakistan
In November, Anam took 13 ODI wickets at an economy rate of 3.00. She was the leading wicket-taker with nine wickets in the ODI series against the West Indies. She followed that up with four wickets in two matches during the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2021, including a three-wicket haul against Zimbabwe.
