Virat Kohli (Delhi), Devdutt Padikkal (Andhra Pradesh), and Prithvi Shaw (Mumbai) had all accomplished the feat before the 24-year-old. Kohli was the first player to hit four tonnes in the 2009-10 season, followed by Shaw and Padikkal, who did it again the following year.

This batter currently holds the record for most runs, best average, individual scores, most fours and sixes, and most centuries in the current tournament.

But this is only the start. He’s struck seven fifties and an undefeated century in 19 IPL innings, leading the run-charts for the 2021 season. He’s had a tremendous amount of success in List A cricket, owing to his ability to stay going and convert excellent starts into significant, meaningful scores. He has 11 centuries at a strike rate of 99 in 64 games. This month, four of those tonnes arrived in a sic-day timeframe.

The ODI series against South Africa, which begins next month following the Tests, may provide him with the opportunity to make that shift. There will be worries about his readiness, as the highveld is a very different obstacle.
