BCCI Announces Indian U19 World Cup Squad

With less than 30 days till the Under-19 World Cup in the West Indies in 2022, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the All India Junior Selection Committee have released the Indian Under-19 team’s squad.

The U19 World Cup 2022, the most recent ICC U19 World Cup edition, will be held from January 14 to February 5. India’s cricket team has had the most success in the sport.

India has won the competition four times, with the preceding three editions ending in second place. In the year 2008, India won the competition under the leadership of Virat Kohli, in 2012 under the supervision of Unmukt Chand, and in 2018 under the leadership of Prithvi Shaw. 

In the 2016 edition of the competition, Team India came in second place, most recently in the 2020 edition, hosted in New Zealand. 

“The All-India Junior Selection Committee has picked India’s squad for the upcoming ICC Under 19 Men’s Cricket World Cup to be played in the West Indies from January 14 to February 5 2022, across four host countries,” the BCCI said in a press release. 

Yash, The Captain 

Yash Dhull, a Delhi boy, has been selected as the crew’s skipper and will be in charge of the tournament. 

In a similar vein, on December 19, the council announced the 17-member India squad for the U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup, with Yash Dhull being named captain for the second time. As the young cricketer, he was one of the leading run-scorers in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy during the September-October 2021-22 season. 

The top two teams from each group will advance to the Super League, while the remaining teams will compete in the Plate over 23 days.

India, the four-time champion, is in Group B. On January 15, they will face South Africa, followed by matches against Ireland and Uganda on January 19 and 22.

Indian Captain’s Interaction 

Rohit Sharma, India’s new ODI and T20I captain, recently spent time with the country’s U19 youngsters at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. The opening batter, who is recovering from a hamstring injury at the NCA, spoke to Yash Dhull and the rest of the team preparing for the ICC event. 

The 48-match schedule kicks out on January 14, with the hosts West Indies taking on Australia, followed by Sri Lanka taking on Scotland in Guyana. Between January 14 and 22, the group stage will take hold in Guyana, St Kitts & Nevis, and Trinidad and Tobago.

The Plate tournament will be held in Trinidad and Tobago from January 25 to 31, with the Super League starting on January 26 in Antigua and Barbuda.

The semi-finals will be held on February 1 and 2 at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Ground and Coolidge Cricket Ground.

The Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Ground will also host the final.
