Laporta has promised new signings in January as Xavi looks to reinforce his squad.
Barcelona will try to get rid of unwanted players to generate cash and free up the wage bill to register the new signings. Barcelona will terminate the loan deals for Luuk de Jong and Yusuf Demir, who will return to their parent clubs. Samuel Umtiti and Philippe Coutinho are currently the biggest earners at the club, which makes it difficult for both the club and the player’s camp to negotiate their exits as not many clubs can afford such huge salaries.
Neto’s situation is somewhat similar to Coutinho, many clubs are interested in signing him, but his wages are too high for a backup keeper; thus, many negotiations have fallen off since the last winter transfer window. Surprisingly, Sergiño Dest is transfer listed for the upcoming transfer window as Xavi & co. are unconvinced after his recent performances. Alex Collado will be joining Granada on loan until the end of the season.
Xavi Hernandez is slowly implementing his ideas into the team as Barcelona are slowly shaping up. The Blaugrana are in desperate need of reinforcements going into January. With domestic cup competitions on the horizon, Barcelona will look to complete signings as soon as possible. After being knocked out of the Champions League, they will continue their campaign in the Europa League. It is expected that the club will go for an attacker due to the absence of Martin Braithwaite, Memphis Depay and Ansu Fati.
Considering the number of wage cuts required from the captains at the start of the season to register their new signings indicates that only one or maximum of two signings will be done in January, and it looks like one or both of those will be from the Manchester clubs. Ferran Torres has been under their radar for a long time, and the player himself is interested in going to the Catalan club.
Ferran Torres has 16 goals in 43 games for Manchester City and has developed himself into a goalscoring threat under Pep Guardiola. His versatility of being able to play as a striker or a winger makes him an ideal target for Xavi. Guardiola doesn’t mind Barcelona signing Torres if the clubs reach an agreement. However, that’s the issue Barcelona are facing right now. The difference between Barcelona’s offer and City’s demand is now closer than ever, reportedly 5 million euros.
But if the negotiations between the clubs break down, Barcelona will go for Chelsea’s Hakim Ziyech. Their main priority is signing Ferran Torres, but they might go for a cheaper option in River Plate’s Julian Alvarez. The Argentine will cost up to 15-20 million euros. Barcelona has another South American on their priority list as they look forward to signing Edinson Cavani. Cavani hasn’t played much since the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo and wants a transfer in this upcoming window as he is out of contract with Manchester United in June 2022.
Cavani’s situation is ideal for Barcelona as his wages and transfer fee are low compared to other targets. It is expected that Barcelona will offer him an 18-month contract. Besides Cavani and Torres, Barcelona will be eyeing loan deals for out of favour players such as Christian Pulisic, Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech and Marcus Rashford. Free transfers and loan deals will allow the club to save some cash so that they can go for big transfers in the summer.
