The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has named a 15-member squad for the ICC Women’s One-Day International World Cup 2022, which will be contested in New Zealand from March 4 to April 3.
Mithali Raj, the senior batter and leader of the Indian squad, has been elected captain of the event, with Harmanpreet Kaur as her deputy.
The All India Women’s Senior Selection Committee decided the squads for the New Zealand trip and showcase event on Wednesday, January 5, according to a BCCI statement.
- Shocking! No Shikha Pandey & Jemimah Rodrigues
Shikha Pandey, pace bowler, and Jemimah Rodrigues, an in-form all-rounder, are among the notable omissions from the squad named on Thursday.
Rodrigues was included in the squad for India’s subsequent tour of Australia in September, but she sat on the bench for the three ODIs as Shafali Verma carved out the opening spot for herself and 21-year-old Yastika Bhatia impressed in her two outings at one drop (35 off 51 and 64 off 69 in India’s only win on tour).
Pandey, on the other hand, has only appeared in three 50-over matches since her return in 2021, taking two wickets. While India has passed over the 32-year-old pacer, Meghana Singh and Renuka Singh Thakur, both of whom earned their India debuts in Australia last year, have been included in the squad. Thakur has only played one T20I and has no 50-over cap.
In addition to the World Cup, the Indian squad will play a five-match One-Day International series against the hosts in New Zealand in February.
India’s World Cup campaign will begin onMarch 6h at MountMaunganui’ss Bay Oval against arch-rival Pakistan. India will play seven round-robin matches before moving on to the knockout phases of the competition.
In 2005 and 2017, India reached the finals of the ICCWomen’ss World Cup. They were defeated by Australia in the 2005 tournament. However, in 2017, they endured the ultimate heartbreak when they were defeated by nine runs in the final at Lord’s. Harmanpreet Kaur had made history in that edition by hitting 171 and putting Australia out of the tournament.
Mithali Raj has been playing international cricket for 23 years. She is the world’s highest run-scorer in One-Day Internationals. What she lacks, however, is an ICC World Cup victory. After a 22-year hiatus, the event returns to New Zealand, and India is determined to make history.
Beginning on February 99, India will play five One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and one Twenty-20 International (T20I) against New Zealand. After then, the focus will move to the World Cup. OnMarch 66, India will play Pakistan at the Bay Oval in Tauranga to begin its campaign. Their most important games, however, will be against Australia and England on March 16 and 19, respectively.
