Has Man City opened the door for Liverpool for a title race?

Last Saturday, the 22nd of January, the Citizens drew with the Saints 1-1, dropping points for the first time since the end of October. And though Pep Guardiola described this performance as their best of the season “by far”, it looks like the PL title race has been blown wide open.

City’s season so far

The 2021/22 Premier League season promised a mouth-watering four-way title race between Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Man United. However, as the season unfolded, it seemed as though Man City would run away with the title again. Despite the loss to Spurs in the first game, Man City started well, only dropping points against Southampton and Liverpool to draws before West Ham defeated them at the end of October. Since then, they went on a winning streak, leading the table and putting an 11-point gap between them and Liverpool. That was until their draw to the Saints last weekend.

The PL title race situation now.

Liverpool is now 9 points away, with a game in hand and a matchday against City still to be played. And knowing the kind of form they are in, you would not put it past them to close this gap. Mind you, it will still be challenging. Lest we forget, City and Liverpool were in an extreme title race in 18/19, where only a point separated the two clubs for a long time. That point was defended well by City, who won the title then. Unlike the 18/19 race, however, both clubs still have to face tough opponents and will likely lose at least one of them. However, Liverpool has something that will give them an advantage over City.

Liverpool’s Season so Far

Liverpool is having a good season themselves. They have lost only two games but have drawn 6 of them. Currently, they are without the services of Salah and Mane, both having gone to play the African Cup of Nations. But Salah is having the season of his life and will be vital when he gets back. While it isn’t like his first season at Liverpool, he is playing very much like Messi, creating and scoring for his club. And if Liverpool is to win the title this season, he will play a pivotal role for them in the title race.

Liverpool’s Triumph Card

Salah is the golden piece that might help Liverpool triumph over City. Man City does not have a figure like him on their side. They do have exceptionally world-class players, but none of the levels that Salah is capable of.

A figure like him is crucial for most big clubs that do well. Messi, Cristiano, Rooney, Ibrahimovic, etc., are all such figures. Even in the toughest of times on the field, you can look towards them to help you win. Salah is very much like that.

City’s Reinforcement

The City management has probably realised this situation, as there are strong rumours that City have signed Argentine striker Julien Alvarez from River Plate for a fee of around 18 million. With a true number 9, they will fancy their chances to maintain their lead in the league and eventually win it.

So yes, City dropping points against Southampton has probably opened up the title race, but the Premier League title is still very much leaning towards the blue side of Manchester.

What is your opinion? Will City defend their title? Or will Liverpool make a late title charge to snatch it for the Citizens? Comment and Share!
