According to rumours in Germany, Manchester United are interested in signing Borussia Dortmund defender Manuel Akanji this summer.
The Switzerland international joined Dortmund for €18 million from Basel in 2018 and has been a regular since then.
● Akanji, a good choice for United
Over the course of four and a half seasons at Signal Iduna Park, Akanji has made 148 appearances and scored three goals.
Man United’s centre-back position is now in disarray, with captain Harry Maguire under immense pressure to improve his performances this season.
Akanji has turned down Borussia Dortmund’s original contract extension offer, preferring to negotiate a better wage in order to join the club’s top earners. Dortmund would wish to extend Akanji’s contract, but due to the pandemic’s impact, they are currently financially limited.
With Akanji’s current contract scheduled to expire at the conclusion of next season, WAZ reports that the BVB will not obstruct the Swiss international’s departure in the summer.
United are interested in signing Akanji, who is a favourite of interim head coach Ralf Rangnick. Akanji has previously stated that he was a United fan.
Throughout the summer, United has a number of issues to address. United would prefer not to address midfield, striker, right-back, or centre-back unless necessary.
The season of Harry Maguire is tipped that way. If Ralf Rangnick suggests a change, Akanji is a good option.
Because of his contract, he is experienced, competent, and relatively inexpensive, allowing United to spend money on other positions as well.
● Pochettino to United?
Manchester United want Mauricio Pochettino to take over at Old Trafford, and Marcus Rashford, Harry Kane, and Jadon Sancho are among the 13 players who are supposedly supporting him.
Pochettino is thought to be one of three candidates in the running to succeed Ralf Rangnick at the end of the season.
United was reportedly impressed by the 49-year-tutoring old’s of Harry Kane, Son Heung-min, Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli, Harry Winks, Eric Dier, and Kyle Walker while at Spurs, according to the source.
And they believe that Pochettino’s methods can improve Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Diogo Dalot, Scott McTominay, and Anthony Elanga, with the PSG manager praising Rashford in particular.
Despite the Reds’ enthusiasm for Pochettino, interim manager Rangnick believes Ajax manager Erik ten Hag is the best prospect to succeed him when his tenure at the Theatre of Dreams ends. Rangnick continues to press for ten Hag, who is also on United’s radar for the manager’s position, according to the publication.
Pochettino, who is under pressure at the Ligue 1 club, is said to want to return to the Premier League, according to the reports. Despite leading PSG to a 13-point lead at the top of Ligue 1, Pochettino has been chastised.
After a successful spell in charge of Tottenham Hotspur between 2014 and 2019, Pochettino would enjoy a return to the Premier League. At Old Trafford, the 49-year-old is well-liked, not only for his playing style but also for his desire to work with young players and promote them from inside the academy. Ten Hag is also considered a strong contender.
