Rohit Sharma has been appointed as India’s Test captain for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka

Following Virat Kohli’s departure, Rohit Sharma was named India’s Test captain on Saturday, completing his leadership takeover across all cricket formats.

●   Hitman, The New Test Skipper

Chetan Sharma, the chairman of selectors, told reporters that the 34-year-old Rohit would lead the team in the forthcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka, which begins on March 4.

He claimed that “Rohit Sharma is our country’s number one cricketer.” After resigning as India’s T20 captain last year and subsequently being fired as ODI captain, “King Kohli” stepped down as Test captain in January.

Rohit, known as “Hitman” for his massive hundreds and sixes, led the squad to a one-day & T20 series sweep against the West Indies this month.

He has a record five IPL titles under his belt and has already taken over the white-ball captaincy following Kohli’s unexpected exit.

Rohit has been a regular component of the Test team since opening the batting for India in October 2019, where he hit twin centuries.

●   Indian Test Squad Review

Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara, Wriddhiman Saha, and Ishant Sharma will not be in the Test team for the forthcoming series. Despite struggling over the last year, Rahane and Pujara have been handed extensive runs in the Test side. Rahane, the former vice-captain, averaged 20.82 in 2021 and 17 in his two games this season.

Pujara had a stronger year last year, averaging 28.08 per game, but he was still unconvincing at times in his No. 3 slot. Ishant’s demotion looks to have been influenced by Mohammed Siraj’s arrival, and Saha has been replaced as Rishabh Pant’s back-up by KS Bharat.

Kuldeep Yadav had a great start to his Test career in 2017, taking nine wickets in his first two games. He has only played irregularly since then, but he still boasts a remarkable record: 26 wickets at an average of 23.84 in seven Tests.

Due to the absence of Axar Patel and Washington Sundar due to injury, and R Ashwin’s participation being conditional on his fitness, Kuldeep has been included as one of the four spinners in the team, with Ravindra Jadeja, Saurabh Kumar, and Jayant Yadav.

Saurabh Kumar has received his first call up to the India squad for the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka after many years of hard work in domestic cricket. The 28-year-old has 196 first-class scalps in 82 innings, including 16 fifers and six 10-wicket hauls, in 46 first-class matches.

With the bat, he has accumulated 1572 runs in 63 innings, including two hundreds. Saurabh Kumar, a late entrant to the national team after years of tough competition, will be eager to bamboozle Sri Lankan hitters and take advantage of the conditions if he receives his first Test cap.

India Test Squad – Rohit Sharma (Captain), Priyank Panchal, Mayank Agarwal, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Hanuma Vihari, Shubhman Gill, Rishabh Pant (wicket-keeper), KS Bharat, Ravindra Jadeja, Jayant Yadav, R. Ashwin (subject to fitness clearance), Kuldeep Yadav, Saurabh Kumar, Mohd. Siraj, Umesh Yadav, Mohd. Shami, Jasprit Bumrah (vice-captain).
