Shane Watson to join Delhi Capitals as an assistant coach

Ricky Ponting, the head coach of the Delhi Capitals, has recommended his fellow Australian for the job, and all that is left are the signing procedures.

Watson will be sharing assistant coach duties with former India batsman Pravin Amre, who was a part of two successful IPL championships, in 2008 with Rajasthan and 2018 with Chennai.

  • Shane Watson is back!

Watson last appeared in the IPL in 2020, when he was a member of Chennai Super Kings. Before quitting all forms of cricket, the Queenslander served the Dhoni-led team for three years. Watson hit a century in the 2018 final against SRH and nearly single-handedly helped his team win the trophy in 2019 with a tenacious 96 against Mumbai in a one-run loss.

Mohammad Kaif and Ajay Ratra, the Delhi Capitals’ assistant coaches, have left the team, leaving only former Indian batsman Praveen Amre as an assistant coach. According to speculations, he would be joined by former India bowler Ajit Agarkar for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 with Shane Watson.

Former bowler Agarkar has already accepted to join the team as an assistant coach, and he will begin his duties after the two-match Test series and three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka.

Aussie David Warner was the first buy of the mega auction for the Delhi Capitals, who paid Rs 6.25 crore for him. Delhi Capitals broke the bank for Rs 10.75 crore thanks to all-rounder Shardul Thakur. The first session of Day 2 of the auction saw DC acquire young Indian players.

Mandeep Singh, an India hitter, was purchased for Rs 1.10 crore, while Khaleel Ahmed and Chetan Sakariya, both left-arm bowlers, were purchased for Rs 5.25 crore and Rs 4.20 crore, respectively. Mohammad Kaif and Ajay Ratra, the assistant coaches from the previous season, have left the Delhi-based organisation. From 2019 to 2019, Kaif was in the role, while Ratra was only there for one season (2021).

Watson has extensive IPL experience. The Australian all-rounder has been a member of the team for 13 seasons, with the 2020 season being his final. He has also won two titles with the Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings, respectively (CSK). In the Indian Premier League, he has 3874 runs and 92 wickets.

Shane Watson and Ajit Agarkar replace Mohammad Kaif and Ajay Ratra, respectively. Meanwhile, the franchise has elected to keep Praveen Amre, a long-time support staff member. James Hope, the bowling coach, will stay on as part of the management team as well.

Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant, a wicketkeeper-batsman, will lead the Capitals in the IPL 2022, and there are big expectations for him. With the likes of David Warner, Prithvi Shaw, Rovman Powell, and Mitchell Marsh in the batting lineup, the Southpaws will have their work cut out for them. Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, and Anrich Nortje will be in charge of bowling.

On paper, the team appears to be fairly balanced, and they would like to maintain their incredible run in the lucrative competition. Meanwhile, the IPL 2022, which will include ten teams this time, is set to begin in late March.
