Karim Benzema vs Mo Salah; Who will win the prestigious Ballon d’Or?

The stage is set at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, France, for the grand finale of the 2022 UEFA Champions League between Liverpool and Real Madrid as we enter the business end of the 2021-22 season, And what better to have a face-off between arguably the two best players in the world at the moment, Liverpool’s Egyptian king Mohammed Salah and Real Madrid’s talisman Karim Benzema, who are battling it out for football’s most prestigious individual award – The Ballon D’or, with their exceptional performances both for club and country and also with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo out of contention for this year’s award, it is these two who are the favourites to win. Karim Benzema has scored an exceptional 43 goals this season for The Galacticos in as many games across all competitions. The 34-year-old is also the top scorer of this year’s UEFA Champions League with 15 goals, including hattricks against PSG in the Round of 16 and Chelsea in the quarter-final and has constantly been performing for the royal whites since the departure of their all-time great Cristiano Ronaldo back in 2018.

On the other hand, the 29-year-old Egyptian Mohammed Salah has scored an impressive 30 goals this season in 45 appearances across all competitions for Liverpool.

However, this year’s Ballon D’or is going to be quite different with the new ruling coming in from this year’s edition; instead of the award’s criteria judging a player’s personal and team achievements over a calendar year, the award will rather only judge over the course of a typical European club season that is from July to June.

Benzema has been clinical for Real Madrid, scoring critical goals, his execution inside the opposition territory, the penalties have turned out to be a lethal striker and is in the form of his life.

Both the players are expected to start the final, and Benzema is currently the top favourite for the Ballon D’or after helping Real win La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup. He also helped win the Nations League for France in October last year.

Salah has helped Liverpool win the EFL Cup in February by beating Chelsea 11-10 on penalties in Wembley. Liverpool is in line to win a possible Quadruple this season with a four-trophy season if they manage to win The UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, and Premier League, which will boost the chance of Salah winning the French award.

But as things stand, Benzema has a slight edge over the Egyptian according to stats and future possibilities as currently, Liverpool is less likely to win the Premier League as they dropped two crucial points against Tottenham and are now lagging three points behind the league leaders Manchester City. On the other hand, Real Madrid already lifted the La Liga title at home last week after beating Espanyol four goals to nil at home. Hence, Benzema is way more likely to lift the prestigious award later this year and has the backing of most footballing experts and ex-footballers.

So what do you think? Who is going to win their maiden Ballon d’Or? Karim Benzema? Mohammed Salah? Or someone else?
