Chelsea’s new ownership: What does the new owner bring to the team?

The war between Russia and Ukraine is no new news. Russia has been facing many sanctions worldwide, and lives have been changed drastically. Many countries like the USA, UK, and France have implemented trade bans on Russia. Football is no stranger here, and it has shown its reaction by banning the Russian national team from the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar. One of the significant actions taken was against Roman Abramovich and his club Chelsea F.C. Since the statement from the UK Government after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Chelsea’s owner Roman Abramovich has been subjected to countless bans. He was even sanctioned when he tried to sell his club, and the process will now be done under the strict jurisdiction of the UK government. Roman Abramovich has been the owner of the club since 2003. Under his reign, Chelsea has won 19 trophies, including 5 premier league titles,2 UEFA Champions League titles, 2 UEFA Europa League titles, a FIFA Club World cup, and many more.

Last week, Abramovich confirmed that he would sell his club to the new ownership group, i.e., American businessman Todd Boehly, Clearlake Capital, Mark Walter, and Hansjoerg Wyss. They had placed a bid of £3.5 billion to take over London’s Chelsea F.C. Todd Boehly was confirmed as the new buyer by the club on Saturday. Todd Boehly is a businessman who is a Co-founder, Chairman, and CEO of Eldridge Industries. He is a graduate of BB. A (Finance) from College of William & Mary. The businessman also has a 27% stake in the Los Angeles Lakers, a professional Basketball Team in NBA, a 20% stake in the Los Angeles Dodgers, a professional Baseball team in MLB, and a part-owner of the Los Angeles Sparks. This is not the first bid he has placed for the Blues in recent years. His bid for £3 billion in 2019 was placed, got rejected by the board of the club and Russian billionaire tycoon Roman Abramovich.

Chelsea has been in difficult times as the defending champions of Europe were defeated by the most successful side in the Champions League, Real Madrid. Their Carabao Cup final loss at Wembley on penalties against Liverpool highlights their misery which started from Abramovich’s departure from the club. After announcing Chelsea’s approval of new ownership, the ban is removed by the UK Government and FIFA. The club is free from restrictions and can now sell, loan, and buy new players in the summer transfer window after the season ends. The club needs to be prepared for the transfer as many players are running out of contracts this summer and waiting for the new owner to settle in so that they can make a decision.

As Abramovich’s era at Chelsea had ended, Chelsea aspires to gain new heights under the American businessman Todd Boehly and others. Boehly is known for changing the teams he owns into championship winners. His arrival saw LA Dodgers and LA Lakers win major championship titles, so can Chelsea dream the same? What plans do the management and owners have in store for the players? Will Chelsea be able to win the silverware as they did under Abramovich, or Will this be a mistake to transfer the ownership to an American overlord? As the ban is removed, will we witness to see some fresh signings from the club, or will the summer transfer window be dry for them? Will they try to maintain their position in the Premier League till the end of the season to qualify for the Champions League, or will they fall into the Europa? Will Tuchel manage the Blues for upcoming seasons, or will he change his mind after the owners take control at Stamford Bridge? The what-ifs are endless but stay tuned to The Sportsway to not miss out on the updates.
