What made Real Madrid one of the greatest clubs ever?

History governs the fact that “Empires are not established in a day.” It takes years of hard work, perseverance and domination to stand at the summit. Real Madrid has established one such empire. Their years of sweat and blood have amounted to 35 LaLiga trophies, 13 UCL and many more titles. Real Madrid is now a synonym for the ‘absolute ruler’. When you talk about footballing history, no one has a better record than Real Madrid. Such is their dominance.

Founded in 1902, Real Madrid has seen a lot. From being the founding members of LaLiga to being its most successful side. From being labelled as ‘European Chokers’ to dominating Europe. From Alfredo di Stefano and Ferenc Puskas to Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema. From the humiliating 1-8 loss against Espanyol to defeating FC Barcelona 11-1. Their past speaks of dedication and hunger for success. You don’t become the best club without having ‘that’ hunger.

Real Madrid has seen countless stars don its whites. Ronaldo, Luis Figo, David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo. Etc. have enjoyed their prime years with Los Blancos. Real Madrid has endured the test of time again and again and again. After di Stefano left, they rebuilt themselves. After Zidane and Galacticos left, they again rebuilt themselves. After Cristiano Ronaldo, their greatest player, left, they again rebuilt themselves. Money wasn’t the only thing which helped Los Blancos. It was their aim to be the best that rallied them.

No club can withstand the wheel of fate, and Real Madrid, too, faced harsh outings. There were times when the future looked bleak for Los Blancos. What did they do? They faced forward. They resolved themselves and took every day out as a ‘do-or-die’ day.

As a matter of fact, FC Barcelona dominated Spain and Europe in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Teams across Europe were terrified with just the thought of playing Barcelona. Historians and former footballers labelled this Barcelona team as the ‘Greatest Team of All Time’. The only team to face this beast head-on was Real Madrid. While Madrid couldn’t beat their eternal rivals, they were by far the most successful team against this team of geniuses. A few years later, both Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo reached their sensational form, which rose the El-Clasico rivalry to the very next level.

This season, while Barcelona is trying to rebuild from the ruins Messi left, Madrid have already made LaLiga theirs and have one hand on the famed UCL Cup. Karim Benzema has been running riot for Madrid, as he has bagged 41 goals across all the competitions. He also has 13 assists to his name. Vinicius Jr. has finally found his feet as he has been a revelation this season. He has formed an effective partnership with Benzema, which has increased his stock. He has returned with a tally of 18 goals and 15 assists as of now.

Real Madrid has already won the Spanish Super Cup or Supercopa de Espana. The culmination of their season would be against Liverpool on the 28th of May. Both the sides have already clashed against each other in the finals of the 2018 UCL, which Madrid won in a spectacular fashion. Earlier, in semi-finals Real Madrid has registered a shocking comeback to beat Manchester City. Liverpool has hinted towards possible revenge and is also aiming for a treble along with Los Blancos. It remains to be seen what happens in the finals. Stay tuned with The Sportsway for more such updates.
