Five talking points from the match as marvelous Delhi beats Punjab by 17 runs!

IPL 2022 is running on its last legs. Unlike any other season, this edition of IPL is still running hot. The primary reason is that 7 teams are still contesting for the three playoff spots. With all the teams pushed back to the corner, there have been daredevil displays throughout the past week, and many more are expected this week. Anyways, let’s kickstart the week with the news that Delhi Capitals have triumphed over the Punjab Kings by 17 runs. Let’s have a look at 5 moments that changed the momentum of the match.

5. David Warner’s golden duck

David Warner has been by far Delhi’s best batsman this season. The seasoned Aussie has been striking the ball like a madman this edition. He has scored 427 runs in the 11 matches he has played. Warner usually started as a non-striker this season, but the veteran started as a striker in this match. The reason for that has been Liam Livingstone, off-spinner bowling the first over. Warner has been forced to play with three different partners this season, including Sarfaraz Khan. Warner might have wanted Sarfaraz to stay a bit longer and didn’t want him to face the spin, his weakness. However, this led to his downfall as Warner sheepishly sent the ball to the gully, where it was caught by Rahul Chahar.

4. Delhi’s spinner spinning a web against clueless Punjab

Punjab Kings might have gotten away with the game even after the initial wickets, but the duo of Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav kept the Capitals in the game. Both the spinners bowled a total of 7 overs, conceding 28 runs and picking up 4 wickets. Another turning point of the match was the moment when Liam Livingstone was beaten by a flipper from Kuldeep Yadav, and Rishabh Pant stumped the Englishman out.

3. Livingstone-the strike bowler

Liam Livingstone has impressed again. The only difference was this time; it was with a ball rather than with the bat. Livingstone bowled in a full quota of 4 overs, conceding 27 runs and picking up three crucial wickets of David Warner, Rishabh Pant and Rovman Powell. His contribution didn’t let Delhi accelerate, reducing them to a grim total of 159.

2. Mitchell Marsh’s innings builder knock

After David Warner’s golden duck, Mitchell Marsh took the responsibility to lead Delhi Capitals to a respectable total. The Aussie scored 63 runs from 48 balls. His knock included 4 fours and 3 sixes. Marsh played with utmost concentration and caution, keeping his wicket safe when others fell. His gritty knock ensured Delhi had enough on the board after 20 overs. Marsh kept his calm and pulled through when he was required to. Truly a spectacular inning from Delhi’s #3.

1. LORD Shardul Thakur’s 4 wicket haul!

Lord Shardul Thakur has been notoriously famous for one thing. He has a peculiar knack for picking twin wickets whenever his team needs a breakthrough. He continued his trend in this match by picking wickets of Shikhar Dhawan and Bhanuka Rajapaksa in his first over. This stopped Punjab’s strong start on its tracks. He came back again in the 18th over to get wickets of Jitesh Sharma and Kagiso Rabada, who were threatening to run away with the match. All hail Lord Shardul.

Delhi’s comfortable win over Punjab has led them to be the most eligible team to qualify, along with Lucknow Super Giants and Rajasthan Royals. On the other hand, Punjab Kings find themselves in a quicksand having to face Sunrisers Hyderabad in their next match. That will prove to be a must-win encounter for both sides. Stay tuned with The Sportsway for more such updates.
