Manchester United eyeing Kante as Ten-Hag looks to revamp the midfield

Manchester United are linked with a move for Chelsea’s Ngolo Kante in this summer transfer window.

Erik ten Hag is keen to reinforce his midfield as he looks forward to adding some quality in the middle of the park due to the departures of Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Nemanja Matic. The Red Devils have been linked with a move for the World Cup winner, who has just one year left on his contract and could leave if Chelsea decides so.

Frenkie de Jong is United’s top priority in this summer transfer window, and Erik ten Hag is personally calling him to persuade the Dutch midfielder to the Premier League. However, De Jong is supposedly very happy in Barcelona and would like to continue playing for the club. Barcelona’s financial condition may favour United, but the prospect of playing the Europa League next season could damage their chances of landing world-class talents to Old Trafford.

N’golo Kante joins the list of Kalvin Phillips and Declan Rice as United need a midfielder who primarily contributes the defensive work in the midfield. However, Declan Rice will be too expensive, and given that Kalvin Phillips is an academy graduate from Leeds United, the transfer looks unlikely. As for Kante, this is not the first time he’s been linked with a switch to Old Trafford. The Frenchman is still one of the best midfielders in the world if he’s fully fit, which was seen in Chelsea’s road to Champions League glory in 2021.

Chelsea is planning a rebuild, and the club’s new owners would’ve to think about a lot of things if they intend to sell Kante to United. The 31-year-old’s injury record has kept him on the sidelines for an extended period of time this season, and the arrival of a commanding midfielder like Conor Gallagher would make things more interesting. Many reports suggest that Chelsea will be open to selling Kante if the right offer comes in.

But United has had a lousy record while making world-class signings in the last 5-6 years. Paul Pogba leaving on a free transfer this summer is the perfect example of how bad United have been in the Transfer business. Paul Pogba was signed as a marquee signing by United, who paid £89 million for his services from Juventus in 2016. In the last 6 years, Pogba has missed almost fifty per cent of the matches due to multiple injuries. The constant change in management also didn’t help him as he played under 3 different managers.

Alexis Sanchez is another player who was signed in 2018 as the Chilean was at the peak of his powers at Arsenal. The swap of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Alexis Sanchez was a terrible move for both parties as Sanchez didn’t settle perfectly into the system and scored just 5 goals in 45 appearances for the club. Therefore, United and Erik ten Hag need to be wise in their decisions as another failed high, paid, world-class signing might become deadwood for the club.

It also depends on Chelsea as Thomas Tuchel still insists that Kante is a ‘key’ player in his team and would like to work with a fully fit Kante for a long time. He said: “I think he is our key, key player, but key players need to be on the pitch. He plays only 40 per cent of the games, and it’s maybe a miracle we arrive in third place because he is our Mo Salah, he is our Virgil van Dijk, and he is our Kevin De Bruyne.
“He is simply that player. He is our Neymar, our Kylian Mbappe. He is the guy who makes the difference, if you only have him 40 per cent it’s a huge problem.” Chelsea is expected to offload Jorginho, who has gained interest from Juventus, but it needs to be seen whether they sell both or not.
