Frenkie de Jong has emerged as the priority signing for the new Red Devil’s boss Erik ten Hag as the club’s search for a new central midfielder goes on.
After recent talks between Ten Hag and De Jong, United feel confident about finding a verbal agreement which seemed difficult in the initial stages, but now the transfer looks imminent. Manchester United had their opening bid of €60m plus €10m in add-ons rejected, but both clubs might agree on a fee close to €100m, including add-ons.
United have been linked with De Jong since Erik ten Hag’s confirmation as the new United boss. The Dutch midfielder had already played a considerable role under him during his time at Ajax when they clinched the league title and came so close to reaching the Champions League final in 2019. Barcelona immediately swooped in to complete his transfer to Camp Nou for a €76m fee.
Since his move to Catalonia, De Jong has struggled to find a rhythm in the Blaugrana colours. The frequent managerial changes haven’t helped him either. Having played under 4 managers in 3 years already, a transfer to another club looks ideal for both parties. However, since Xavi has arrived, he has shown signs of improvement, which are encouraging since Xavi has worked with him for a short period of time.
Xavi is a big fan of his services and has expressed this on multiple occasions in the past few months. But Barcelona’s financial situation is once again crumbling as the club could be forced to sell some crucial players in order to repay their debt and implement a significant rebuild. The Catalan giants have already secured free signings in the summer with the likes of Franck Kessie and Andreas Christensen. Robert Lewandowski still remains the club’s marquee signing as the Polish international has stated his desire to play for Barcelona, but first, the club needs to find ways to lower their wage bill, and one of them is to sell players.
De Jong’s transfer saga has linked another name in the mix-up. Bernardo Silva is being linked with Barcelona if Frenkie de Jong joins The Red Devils. Xavi doesn’t want to compromise in signing a backup for De Jong. Instead, he prefers to replace the Dutchman with another world-class talent. Silva was close to leaving last summer, but Guardiola managed to keep him at City for one more season. But reports suggest that Pep won’t mind his departure in this summer transfer window if Manchester City and Barcelona reach an agreement.
Both clubs are under a major rebuild, and both managers look determined to turn around their situation as soon as possible. Besides their marquee signings, both managers have a lot of areas to work on, mainly Manchester United, who finished sixth in the Premier League with their lowest-ever total in the top flight (58 points) and will miss out on the Champions League next season.
Frenkie de Jong to Manchester United looks closer than ever as United look forward to making him their statement signing after losing out on the Darwin Nunez deal to Liverpool. Stay Tuned with The Sportsway for more updates.
