Is Chelsea’s interest in signing Dembele worth it?

Chelsea is determined to rebuild their squad for the 2022/23 season, and Ousmane Dembele is one of the players who is being targeted to be brought in, alongside the City forward, Raheem Sterling. The Frenchman is considered to be the replacement for Romelu Lukaku, who is apparently very interested in leaving Chelsea and going back to Inter Milan. But the big question is will Dembele be able to fill the gap left by Lukaku?

Dembele is currently serving as a forward at FC Barcelona. He joined Barcelona in 2017, from Borussia Dortmund, for a massive sum of €105 million. The French international had a splendid run under Xavi in the 2021/22 season and ended up with the most assists (13) in La Liga. However, Barca’s plans to sign Robert Lewandowski and Andreas Christensen leave Dembele’s future bleak at Camp Nou.

Dembele has been offered a renewal from Barcelona, but the winger doesn’t look keen to accept it. The renewal saga has almost run its course, and the Catalans are preparing for the next season without him. Given his injury-prone tenure at Barcelona, not many clubs are interested in the Frenchman, even when he is available for free.

How effective is his style of play?

Dembele plays as a winger and can perform well on either of the flanks, thanks to his ability to use both feet and flex his technical ability, speed, and agility to get past opponents or beat defenders in one-on-one situations. He has excellent quality when it comes to long-range shooting. His dribbling skills and ability to perform intricate movements enable him to cut through from the left or right wing in order to score or create goal-scoring opportunities.

Dembele might not be a race-horse like his French teammate, Kylian Mbappe, but his ability to break through in the small spaces can provide quite a threat. The Frenchman is also an accomplished crosser and works well on both broad areas and the centre.

What does it take to go from FCB to Chelsea?

The Frenchman now has an offer to join the Blues under the Bosman ruling. He was also wanted by Paris Saint-Germain until they ended their interest in the Barca winger. However, the fact that Dembele has already been managed by Tuchel at Dortmund gives Chelsea the upper hand.

Dembele is particularly seeking reassurance from Chelsea that if he joins them, he will be a regular starter and will not be subjected to the typical ‘squad rotation’. In any case, given the depth at Chelsea’s attacking positions, regular starts for the Frenchman may not be guaranteed. He have to compete Timo Werner, Christian Pulisic, Kai Havertz, Hakim Ziyech, and Callum Hudson-Odoi pushing for the forward position.

All in all, Dembele seems like a good move for Chelsea, especially as a replacement for Romelu Lukaku. But yet, there might be another signing by the Blues in the form of Raheem Sterling. This will lay out even more options for Chelsea’s attacking lineup. The fact that Dembele has a bad history of injuries can spoil the game for the Blues.
