How is Manchester United’s strategy working to bring de Jong on board?

Manchester United’s new boss, Erik ten Hag, has started preparing to enhance his squad’s performance, given the previous season’s blasphemy. To achieve a better fate next season, the Bossman has put the Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong on his hit list. Ten Hag has already managed de Jong while at Ajax and, if everything goes well, expects him to be his first signing as the Red Devils’ new manager.

Manchester United’s terrible season and changing managers

It would not be an exaggeration when said that the Red Devils had a dreadful 2021-22 season. The signings of star players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho at the beginning of the season lit the hopes of having a great season. But instead, they ended up in the sixth spot in the Premier League and lost their chances of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League. After Ole Gunnar Solskjær left his role as the manager, the first-team coach Michael Carrick took over the team midway through the season. Later, Ralf Rangnick was appointed as the interim coach until the end of the season. Finally, on 21 April 2022, Dutch coach Erik ten Hag was designated with the responsibility of the manager. He signed a contract till June 2025.

De Jong and Ten Hag’s plans for the 2022/23 season

Since his arrival at the club, the Dutch Manager has sought to bring in more power to the squad, especially the midfield, and Frenkie de Jong is considered his primary target in this revolution. The Dutch professional is currently playing as a midfielder at FC Barcelona since 2019. He signed a five-year deal with the Blaugrana for a fee of €75 million.

However, de Jong’s move to Old Trafford has its own complications as Barcelona are seemingly demanding negotiators, and they are not willing to offer the 25-year-old for less than what they consider to be his worth. It is reported that Barcelona is asking a price of €90 million, excluding player bonuses. The Catalans are reportedly still pressuring United to up their offer a little, but the Red Devils are wary of going beyond €75 million as they prepare to pay his big salary as well. The Barca winger is justifiably regarded as one of the top midfielders in the world. He can dominate games from midfield and his superb passing range and ball control. He fills the club’s midfield void, which has existed for some time.

Whilst all is looking good, Frenkie de Jong is reportedly uninterested in leaving Barcelona. The Dutch magnum is reportedly happy under Xavi and wishes to polish himself in Blaugrana colours. Erik ten Hag is appealing as much, but it is still hard to convince Frenkie to leave Barcelona. Barcelona, on the other hand, is second-guessing Bernardo Silva and might want to retain the services of Frenkie de Jong.

Meanwhile, Manchester United are also trying to pursue Danish midfielder, Christian Eriksen. The club is also interested in the Brazilian winger Antony and the Argentine defender Lisandro Martinez who are both from Ajax under ten Hag. Stay Tuned with The Sportsway for more updates!
