According to reports, Chelsea has already offered Timo Werner and £50m to Juventus in their first attempt to bring the Dutchman to Stamford Bridge.
After winning the Champions League in 2021, Chelsea was considered one of the title contenders for the upcoming season after making a statement by bringing in Romelu Lukaku for a club-record-breaking deal worth £97m. But things went downhill after Lukaku’s controversial interview during December that resulted in Chelsea’s inconsistent run of games. Thomas Tuchel suffered the most as the German manager had to change his whole system to accommodate players like Kai Havertz into a very different role.
Chelsea faced a big blow to their future aspirations when the club was seized by the UK government after club owner Roman Abramovich’s assets were frozen due to a crackdown on Russian oligarchs all over Europe. With the club’s future revolving in uncertainty, many players such as Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen opted to leave on free transfers. Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso will also probably make a move this summer, leaving the whole Chelsea backline in shambles. After making changes in the management, new owner Todd Boehly has taken a hands-on role in handling summer transfer dealings.
Thomas Tuchel has shortlisted a few players as priority signings for the club. One of them being Juventus’ Matthijs de Ligt. De Ligt has been underwhelming since he arrived from Ajax in 2019. The Dutchman captained a very young Ajax side to the Champions League semifinals just at the age of 19 and led them to a domestic double before joining Juventus. The 22-year-old has been impressive for the Dutch National Team, which has a similar tactical setup as Chelsea, which might have attracted the Blues to pursue him.
Chelsea has not only shown interest but has proposed a player plus cash deal to Juventus, who have reportedly agreed to accept a player swap and cash for De Ligt, but they are more interested in acquiring the services of Christian Pulisic rather than that of Timo Werner. Christian Pulisic has already suffered a series of injuries and has spent a lot of time on the bench under Tuchel. The American skipper has hinted at his lack of game time ahead of the World Cup at the end of the year.
Pulisic isn’t the only player who might switch sides in this transfer, as new reports suggest Jorginho could be included in this deal too. The European champion had a disappointing season and is keen to return to Italy after completing four seasons with the Blues. Tuchel won’t mind giving up either of them as Conor Gallagher returns from his loan spell and would fit in perfectly as his replacement. Chelsea is also looking for reinforcements in their forward line as they intend to seal the transfers for Raheem Sterling and Raphinha in the coming weeks.
It needs to be seen how will Chelsea approach this deal as they find themselves in desperate need of defenders following the exits of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen. Stay Tuned with The Sportsway for more updates.
