The varying success of Rishabh Pant in Test and T20 Cricket!

The Pant Effect: Test vs T20

The world witnessed a massive inning by Rishabh Pant as he scored 146 in the first innings against England in the fifth test held at Edgbaston. This has taken the count of his centuries in test cricket to 5, each a game of epic proportion.

A constant in the team of India for all the formats, Pant has played several international T20 matches as well, with his highest score in the format being 52. However, his recent form in the T20 format of the game has been questionable. Many have commented on his game, saying that he is a far better test player than a T20 player.

In a span of four years, Pant’s total remains at 2123 in 53 innings with an average of 43.32. His highest total in one innings is a monumental 159 not out against Australia. Previously considered a freakish batsman in his early days, his batting brilliance becomes even more deadly when combined with his muscular power.

It is on account of this that the Indian T20 team can benefit from the left-handed batsman’s proficiency. With unrivalled attacking skills, he is undoubtedly going to be beneficial for any T20 squad, a reflection of which comes from his position as the skipper for the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League. His attacking shot average is amongst the highest for any player to have scored 500 or more runs in the tournament.

While a more tempered Pant has been seen in recent times, yet his natural game continues to remain attacking. His counterattack is considered a highly effective approach in T20 cricket.

Darren Gough, a former English pacer, thinks that Pant will be a formidable T20 player in the time to come. ‘No boundary is big enough for him,’ Gough says. He has proved time and again with his shots soaring high above the boundary line. With serious talent, he has been in sight of many.

As I write this article between Pant’s Test and T20 prowess, as a spectator, I experience his incredible wicket-keeping skills in the first India vs England match in the ODI series. Who’s to say what lies in store for this one-of-a-kind batsman? The cricket ground seems to be his place of worship. Stay Tuned with The Sportsway for more updates!
