Is signing Kalvin Phillips an excellent move for the City?

Manchester City has been continuously signing players one after the other and is determined to bring prominent faces to the Etihad Stadium. The City has recently brought in the Leeds star player Kalvin Phillips. The 26-year-old England international is City’s second big signing after Erling Haaland. At the moment, the debate is about how Pep Guardiola makes use of the former Leeds midfielder.

Phillips’ transfer to City came as a big upset for the Premier League club Leeds United as the England international has been an essential asset for the club. He was born in Leeds and had been playing for the Leeds Academy since 2010, when he was 14 years old. The midfielder was continuously improving his game and was finally observed by the English Manager Gareth Southgate. He received his maiden call-up for the England squad in August 2020 and also served as a crucial player for the country through the UEFA Euro 2020.

Phillips’ role in the City squad

Kalvin Phillips’ time at Leeds sharpened and honed his skills as a potential defensive midfielder in the Premier League. His form continuously prospered under the Argentine manager Marcelo Biesla. This bettered Phillips’ chances for the international call-ups for England in 2020, and as expected, Southgate started observing Phillips.

One of the important requirements in Man City is a defensive midfielder as a replacement for the former captain Fernandinho. In April, the Brazilian professional mentioned that he would be leaving the club at the end of the season. Guardiola sought Phillips as a probable and suitable substitute for Fernandinho. So, the club successfully grabbed the midfielder and signed a six-year deal with him for £42 million.

With Raheem Sterling’s departure from Manchester City, the England international may have a critical role to play alongside the likes of İlkay Gündoğan and Bernardo Silva. Furthermore, the midfielder is only 26 years old, giving him plenty of opportunities to learn new skills, develop his repertoire and grow in the club. Stay Tuned with The Sportsway for more updates!
