Bayern has made it quite clear that they mean pure and strong business in this summer transfer window. After successfully acquiring Senegalese winger Sadio Mane, Bayern has launched another missile by signing the Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt . Chelsea had a keen eye on the Netherlands international for their defence, unfortunately, suffered a defeat infront of Bayern.
The Dutchman at Ajax and move to Juventus
De Ligt has been a part of some of the biggest clubs in the history of football. The Netherlands international has played for the Dutch professional football club Ajax since he was nine years old. He became the youngest player at the age of 17 years and 285 days old to play in an major European championship. He started for Ajax in 2017 UEFA Europa League final against Manchester United. Praises poured over for de Ligt as the club announced him as the youngest captain of Ajax in March 2018. Also, he steered his team to an incredible run in the 2018-19 Champions League semi-finals and has since established his place among the game’s top performers.
Later on, the Dutchman signed a five-year deal with the Italian champions Juventus for a fee of €75 million, with €10.5 million add-ons. He had a shaky start at Juventus. He did, however, bounce back from a rough beginning to rank among the best defenders in Serie A.
Intentions to join FC Bayern
Chelsea and Bayern, two of Europe’s elite clubs, have tussled against each other to gain the profits of the Juventus defender, who is inarguably one of the best in the game. However, the Dutchman completely sidelined the Blues’ request by stating his wish to join the Bundesliga champions. Julian Nagelsmann, the head coach of Bayern, has been looking for a centre-back who can take the reins of the defence. De Ligt fulfils these criteria because the Dutch defender showed outstanding leadership qualities while playing for Ajax.
The Netherlands international finally completed his move to the Allianz Arena on 19 July 2022 on a five-year contract which lasts till 2027. Hasan Salihamidžić, the sporting director at Bayern, and Marco Neppe, the technical director, travelled to Italy for talks. A total of €67 million was paid to the centre-back, with the possibility of a further €10 million as bonuses. De Ligt is expected to join the starting XI,partnering up with either Dayot Upamecano, Lucas Hernández, or Benjamin Pavard to give a major boost to the defence.
