Shreyas Iyer steps up in the absence of top dogs!

Shreyas Iyer, leading the Indian team as the big boys have been given a rest aganist West Indies. The batsman has seen an uneven trajectory since he began playing. His recent 50 runs stint helped India win their first ODI match against West Indies in the ongoing series.

Iyer has a chance to prove him, as the usual top player not present in the squad. The names of Rohit Sharma, Kohli and KL Rahul are missing in this series, but the other Indian players have proved thier worth. Shreyas Iyer slammed 63 runs off 71 balls at the Queen’s Park Oval stadium. He was in smashing form before he got out by Alzarri Joseph.

Team India was struggling at 79 for 3 when Iyer managed pitch his 99-run partnership with Samson. A four through midwicket brought up his half-century. He looked good on the pitch with consistent batting, occasionally going for the big hits.

In the post-match conference, Iyer said, “I was really happy with the score which I got today but really unhappy with the way I was dismissed. I thought I could have taken the team through easily but very unfortunate with the wicket. Hopefully, I score a century in the next game.”

In the first match of the series, Iyer had scored 54 runs, helping maintain the steady pace during India’s batting. Hitting 5 fours and 2 sixes, Iyer seemed to be toying with the bowlers, especially the spinners. This match is a milestone in his career after he joined the ranks of the likes of Kohli, and Dhawan to cross the 1000-runs mark in international ODI for India. He became the joint second fastest to do it in 25 innings, sharing it with former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu.

The first match saw Iyer up the ante as he got a boundary off a short ball by Jayden Seales. Knowingly West Indies tried to exploit his uncertainty while playing short balls, but Iyer held his own in the match.

Shreyas Iyer has not been a regular in the playing 11 for team India, and people have expressed their dissent at this, including Indian skipper Rohit Sharma on previous occasions.
